Hi Moneysavers,
Come on, we may all be in need of a good nurse one day. I'm shocked by the attitude of you all. My sister is a nurse and I know the hours she works for what to me is very little in return. It's thankless job and they do suffer abuse from patients and family/visitors on a daily basis. We used to be a caring community, seems to me when money is mentioned some people forget their humanity.
If you or your family are ill, you will get unbiased care, it won't be the kind you deserve for your appalling attitude.
A signature will cost you nothing so why the grudging replies?

Nobody has badmouthed nurses, it's a comendable job and one that I think only a certain type of person can do. I understand they get abuse from paitients and it can be a thankless job but isnt most peoples?! I know mine is. The point people have been trying to make is not in relation to the job, it's in relation to the training before the job. The nursing students get bursarys and not loans, they have to do work experiance instead of constant lectures, why should they also get more money. As I said before I have immediate family and friends in the nursing field and totally understand what the job entails but they are well paid for it, and they go into the job knowing the pros and cons.

Seems a bit of a contradiction, Are the Nurses forgetting their humanity then??? What do they want more money for then??, Surely the great feeling of doing such a great caring job is enough??
From my own point of view..
You say "A signature will cost you nothing so why the grudging replies?" Where do you think the extra money will come from.. The Tax payer, ... I wouldn't begrudge them it if it came from the Current NHS Budget, Possibly from the 10's of Millions of Pounds they waste every year on bureaucracy such as having to fill in forms to request the Hospital Engineering Department to come & change a lightbulb (Aparently Doctors & Nurses aren't that capable) & new computer systems that don’t work. (REF Subject on GMTV Or This Morning, this morning on the TV)
It doesn't matter what course you do at University, No one group of students should be treated any different than another.
You originally seemed to portray that the nurse were doing 37Hrs / week every week on top of all their lectures, Not true according to AceCobra.. Just how many hours in a year do they work? Is this ofset against lecture time?? this needs to be clarified..
You say we are " the sort who begrudge others what is right and fair. "
Lifes' Not Fair, as Cath said "they understand what the job entails ... and they go into the job knowing the pros and cons.
Many jobs are !!!!!!. When the last time you went out & said hello to your bin man and thanked him for doing such a stirling job in removing your rubbish?
Nurses no doubt do a Fantastic job.. as do Doctors, When qualified they get paid a fair salary, If they have to rack up some debt getting to that standard, thats the price you pay.
I did a 4 year degree, had 4 years of Student Loans, Bank Loans, etc. etc. etc. I did my degree in England & only got home for 1 week a year at christmas. all the other spare time I had I worked, and I mean all the spare time.. It's what it costs for a Degree.
I still need some convincing..Live, Love & Laugh A Lot!0 -

Not to detract from the original thread, but I had some laugh this morning, I was out in the car and was behind the bin lorry. Well I remember some years ago in the papers about council workers not lifting bins that the lids where slightly ajar, all to do with health and safety, and here this morning two council workers where hanging off the end of the bin lorry, no seat belts or safety harnesses, it's a crazy world people

I can't see any reference in my posts to how hard I work.......like I mentioned before, I'm not a nurse. My signature is a quote from that well respected sage, Peter Griffin from Family Guy!:T
I also disagree with the variety of posts saying that doctors and nurses are very well paid for their time. When I started as a junior doctor I worked approx 100 hours a week which came in at a healthy £3 an hour in 2002. My bar job paid more as a student and I did less unsocial hours, and I didn't need 5 years at Uni to obtain 3 degrees to do it. Luckily with reforms to the way doctors are trained and the European Working Time Directive our hours have lessened, although doctors are the only public sector workers who are "excused" the normal 48 hours limit and can do 56 hours a week. Despite this, there are only a few hospital jobs in Northern Ireland that are actually compliant with this directive and the reality can be somewhere closer to the old 100 hour weeks we used to do. It's the nature of the job really, unfortunately patients aren't normally under control of when they decide to get life-threateningly unwell (and no, I'm not complaining about my job or hours.....I love my job and knew the hours I would work when I went into it).Life in this world is, as it were, a sojourn in a cave. What can we know of reality? For all we can see of the true nature of existence is, shall we say, no more than bewildering and amusing shadows cast upon the inner wall of the cave by the unseen blinding light of absolute truth, from which we may or may not deduce some glimmer of veracity, and we as troglodyte seekers of wisdom can only lift our voices to the unseen and say humbly "Go on, do deformed rabbit again.....it's my favourite". © Terry Pratchett in "Small Gods"

.........I still need some convincing..
To address the points above.
1. There is a degree of satisfaction in a job well done, no matter what it is. The reality is, in today's letigious society, it's very rare for a patient or their relatives to even thank the people looking after them......it's much more common to receive complaints and abuse. Any patients that have thanked me in the past however have made my day if I'm honest. The point of "surely the job is thanks enough" has been used by Thatcher and Blair both in the recent past......thanks are always welcome but are not legal tender in the UK!
2. I completely agree that the amount of waste in the NHS is ridiculous.....the NHS cannot sustain this forever. The amount of bureaucracy is ridiculous and there are so many different managers that most people don't know what they all do. I personally don't think that taxes should be raised to pay for this.....rather the taxes we pay should be applied more efficiently. I would rather my taxes put into health and education rather than squandered on an oil-feud.
Your tongue in cheek comment about doctors and nurses not being able to change lightbulbs is a bit silly though. I think you'll find that most public and private sector companies will have their own maintenance department and will not allow anyone other than trained staff to maintain equipment (yes, even lights), electrical or otherwise, for reasons of health and safety. For example, if I got electrocuted myself changing a bulb I could sue my employer as I do not have formal training in changing bulbs........it's a joke. The other thing is that the people in the maintenance department take a dim view on you doing their job! I remember once, when working as a bar man in a London chain, I hung up a blackboard behind the bar that was sitting for two weeks in the store......literally just attached it to two hooks in the roof that were already there. The maintenance guy who came a week later threatened head office with strike action!!! It's the same in the health service.
I have to agree with the computer systems though.....it is a mammoth task and they seem to just be changing their mind every few years and going back to scratch.....how !!!!!!!g pointless!
On a final note - I actually do thank my bin men for a job well done (although that's probably 'cos I know a few of them quite well socially:rotfl: )Life in this world is, as it were, a sojourn in a cave. Sorry, I thought I made that clear in one of my previous posts......I think education should be free for all......I didn't pay fees for my course and to be honest, couldn't have afforded Uni otherwise, I didn't qualify for any other type of grant and so funded my course with part time jobs and loans.
I just thought the nursing one was a good starting point.....Life in this world is, as it were, a sojourn in a cave. What can we know of reality?
