Hi all. Looking for opinions on this quote for a bathroom installation. New suite will be going where the current one is, radiator is being replaced wit a wall-mounted towel rail. I'm sourcing the suite, replacement shower, tiles and flooring. Small bathroom - approx 7ftx5.5ft. Low ceiling - about 7.5ft high. Walls are partially tiled at the moment (approx 1/4-1/3 of total wall space) but I'm having it completely tiled. Here is the quote:

.To remove existing bathroom suite
.To remove existing wall tiles etc
.To fit new thermostatic shower
.To fit new towel rail
.To fit new WC, sink and bath with bi fold bath screen
.To tile all walls floor to ceiling including grout and adhesive
.To plywood floor to accept tiles including plywood
.To tile floor area including grout and tile adhesive
(Costs that haven't been taken into account are for any replacement plasterboard after the removal of existing tiles).
All for the sum of £1180.00

This is (one part of) my first major home improvement project, so any opinions gratefully received. I do have another couple of quotes coming in over the next few days but wondered how this one stands up as a baseline.

Thanks in advance.

  • Are you supplying all the fixtures and fittings...bath and basin taps, wastes, traps etc?

What have you been quoted for timescale?

Yes, I'm supplying all the fixtures and fittings for the suite - everything that is being fitted, basically. Timescale - about 3-4 days.

I should also have mentioned I'm in the West of Scotland, if that makes any difference.

    Cheers again.

Well I wouldn't do the job for that but then again I'm not in the W of Scotland. :D

Can't comment further on price then - sorry. Just as a matter of interest how long do they say it will take them - nearest man-day will do? Ta.

    Cheers

Like I said, they reckon they'll be on-site for 3-4 days. How it will pan out in man days I'm not sure as not all of the tradesmen will be here all the time, obviously.

Just out of interest :) how much would you do it for in SW London?

Sorry missed your amendment as to timescale - I must have been typing at the same time you were. For me thats not going to happen. In a bathroom of that size there is only room for one man to work sensibly and at a productive rate at any one time. Site unseen I would say thats a eight - ten man-day job. So at a stretch with two of them on it (which I don't think possible) in six to eight man days its pushing it to the very limit of corners aren't to be cut. A good fitter can make a cheap bathroom look a milion dollars but he doesn't rush it. A bad one rushing it can make an expensive bathroom look carp. Plus there are the general building materials they have to include (I did notice that any new plasterboard is outwith the scope) so if two of them on the job they are really doing it for peanuts (yes I do remember that I'm in a more expensive part of the country). All in all there seems considerable scope for a low initial price and then wait until the extras hit in both time and materials due to "unforseen circumstances" and that could be fairly open ended.

I think you should get at least one if not two more quotes for comparison purposes if nothing else. That will enable you guage whether the price quoted is the going rate for your particular job and whether I'm just being a Jonah. :D

    Cheers

That would be giving the game away :) and as I wouldn't want to be thought of as touting for biz (which is agi'n forum rules anyway) I'll PM you. BTW in any event I'm NOT going to travel to Western Scotland - well I might for £3k LoL.

    Cheers

  • But, why, the scenery's so nice up here - and that's the kind of thing money can't buy! :D

Cheers for the input and, yes, I do have two more quotes coming. And I do appreciate that cheapest isn't necessarily the best option.

    Thanks again.

    +1

seems way too cheap to me even if you have a nice view
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.
  • That is way 2 cheap, can't imagine location is anything to do with it but raw materials, adhesives and fuel cant be to much different from mainland England.

I would Strongly suggest getting 2 more quotations as on this occasion you will probably get a huge extra's bill on pay day.

    Hope this helps.

Also where did you buy your Bath, taps shower etc ?
