I have tried again at 4.30pm today and now they advise they are unable to deal with any enquiries currently try again later ?? What a joke,if you are unable to contact them ,what are the alternatives

For queries relating to PAYE for individuals:
    HM Revenue & Customs
    Pay As You Earn
    PO Box 1970
    Liverpool
    L75 1WX

Write with full details, keep a copy of the letter, send recorded delivery.

which years tax code is it? If it is 12/13 then you have plenty of time to get it sorted as it does not come into use until 06/04/2012.

The best times to call are before 8.30 in the morning and between 7 and 8 at night.

The call volumes at the minute are higher due to the Self assessment deadline, and yes the PCS members, if they choose, are out on strike on Tuesday.

    send recorded delivery.

Agree with that - if it's for 12-13, where there's 3 months to sort it.

But sending it recorded delivery is pointless. A soon as it's out of an envelope it's on a pile to be distributed and immediately loses it's connection to the fact it was sent recorded. So you've upped your costs, and increased the HMRC workload for no appreciable benefit.

Just send it normal post and keep a copy. Doesn't need more than that.

Or he can ask for a certificate of posting from the Post Office (which HMRC accepted when paper VAT returns were sent in) as proof of postage and save himself a few pennies.

Royal Mail frequently do not update the tracking on such deliveries to bulk receipt offices. So you have no record.

We've always used recorded delivery and been able to track - perhaps the system has changed?
