I have a hand drawing of a chemical structure that I can't interpret. I have it saved as a PDF and as a bmp. Is there anyway I can search for the picture or something similar on the t'interweb? I have tried tin eye, but I don't want to do an origin search because there is no origin.

Thanks muchly.
Jo

LOL. Doh - why didn't I think of that?!

    Here we go: http://s299.photobucket.com/albums/mm311/msejoho/Chemistry%20type%20stuff/

I believe it is a terpene, but it might not be and it is old (the drawing that is) - 1910.

    Thanks again.

  • Still not home, and it has been (mumble, mumble) years since I remembered .... maybe a C13 structure (methyl ?? steroids ????) well out of my depth there though Organics where never my stronger points.

There's no sense crying over every mistake.
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.
  • Ok that was quite painful, had to go dig out an old text book. I am fairly confident the systematic name for this compound is 3-methyl 1-prop-1-en-2-yl cyclohexene

  • Agree with BackOnTrack's systematic name.

It's an isomer of limonene (it has the propene at the 6-position) - citrus scent commonly used in perfumes.
I'm dreaming of a white Christmas.
But, if the white runs out, I'll drink the red.
