Hi,i recently moved house and decided I was going to stick with my old gas and electricity supplier who are edf.
I called npower who were the previous suppliers to my new property gave them a reading from the new property and told them to send me a final bill which they did.
Few weeks later I recieved a much larger bill from npower based on an estimate and when I called them they said the reason for this is because it took them and edf a lot longer to sort out the transfer and in cases like this they are entitled to estimate.
Is this correct and do I have to pay.

When you moving into a property you will be in a deemed contract with the current supplier - in this case Npower - for at least 4 weeks, depending on how quickly you arrange the transfer and how long the transfer takes to go through.
When the transfer is nearing the final stages, the onus is on the new supplier - edf - to request meter readings from you and provide them to the old supplier. They will then agree this between them and the old supplier will then send you out a final bill for the amount used between you moving in and the meter reading you supplied to the new supplier.
So, did you:
1. Supply Npower with an opening meter reading when you moved in?
- Is this showing on the statement and is correct?
2. Did you supply EDF a meter reading close to the date of transfer?
3. Is the estimated meter reading far out from what it would actually be?
4. Does your opening meter reading with edf tally with the closing npower reading - even though its an estimate? It should tally but there have been cases where it hasnt.
The key points though are that the opening meter reading is correct, and the both companies have the same meter reading.
They are entitled to estimate if no meter reading was provided close to the transfer date. Though this estimate has to be reasonable and can be contested providing you have something to back it up with.
Be aware aswell that Npower use seasonal weighting on there two tier tariffs so their winter bills are higher than there summer bills0 -
Thanks I will go through my paperwork and check all the above0
