in Cutting tax
I have just paid my tax using a bill payment. I copied and pasted my UTR from the self assessment submission statement that I got when I submitted the form online. I have not received any letter or payslip in confirmation.
After paying, I noticed that the website states that the UTRs are followed by a letter 'K',,, on my submission self assessment there was no K after the number so what I copied and pasted did not have a K on it on my bank details
Will this cause delay and will my payment be lost?
I have spent ages on the 'helpline' today and cannot face phoning them again. The annoying thing is I copied and pasted so that I wouldnt get the numbers wrong and now look whats happened.:(

I think if you are using the on line system then it should show if your payment has been credited or not so perhaps just keep checking for now and if it does not show up call them.0

Are the 10 x numerics correct? If so you've got the critical majority correct. I did point out on your other thread that DD is the safest as it proofs the reference!
If you've only left off the 'K' .... that's the file ID that tracks the payment direct to SA. Possibly does mean that it won't settle directly on your SA record when it gets there via Faster Payment. But it will be readily traced .... and will go to your record with the right posting date. So no interest charged.
Unless you can get through to the Accounts Office there's no point in trying to ring. Just leave them to sort it. Unfortunately 'electronic payment' is not the panacea others would have you believe as Reference issues are as endemic there as on postal payments
If you have future SA payments to make - get a DD mandate set up via your online. Then you just Login and use it whenever. It's the safest .... and lets you hang onto your money the longest. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
thank you, i emailed the accounts at shipley but i dont expect a response yet, in addition it said on the help thing that if you contact them it can ONLY be about chaps payments otherwise they cant answer any queries
i had no concept that it would be wrong, thats the reason i copied and pasted it so that it would be right0 -
I wouldn't fret about it. Have a look at your SA online in a few days and see if it's made it onto the accounting. Unfortunately you've hit the peak week where payments will hit 0.5million transactions on some days. So if it hits the suspense account - it won't be on its own - and will take a few days to extract into the right place.
You got that DD set up for next time!If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
To help trace the payment HMRC will need the following :
1) Date payment cleared your bank account
2) Sort code & bank account number from which payment was made
3) Amount of payment
4) Reference number it *Should* have gone to.
I would suggest you do it in writing, they should then be able to trace & reallocate the payment.I have just paid my tax using a bill payment. To help trace the payment HMRC will need the following :
No - they won't need any of that. They're trying to 'allocate' a payment not 'trace' it. Subtle - but significant.
The Reference is complete, if pasted from SA online, other than the file indicator which tracks it into SA. At worst it will make it into a suspense account - where the 10 x numerics pasted will be a bit of a giveaway. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
The K is automatically there at the end of the box where you put the numbers - I have just paid mine and seen it!0

The OP used a Faster Payment facility from his own Bank ...... why would there be a 'K' in the Reference box?
Are you not talking about the DD provided by HMRC - or the BillPay dedicated link from SA?If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
When payments are made by BACS/CHAPS the reference number is all thats needed NOT the letter (like K for SA, B for VAT etc). The OP used a Faster Payment facility from his own Bank ...... why would there be a 'K' in the Reference box?

You can't pay via BACS from personal accounts any more - doesn't exist since 1st Jan.
For all payments to HMRC where you're paying SA and doing it electronically :When making your Self Assessment payment you will need your Self Assessment reference number, also referred to as your UTR. This is shown on the payslip HMRC sends you and is located in the reference box. The reference number is made up of ten digits followed by the letter 'K', for example 1234567890K
The VAT Reference is 9 characters - and doesn't contain a File character? All HMRC references do (some are inboard not at the beginning / end) and are needed to route the payment to the correct accounting system. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0
