BG Homecare - worth the money?
Options
I have been with BG Homecare for three years now and have just received their renewal notice for next year. Yet again the price has gone up by roughly 10% to £34.50 per month.
In that time, I have called them out to fix my boiler once when the engineer had to re-fill the system. It took him about 5 minutes using a foot pump and has been right as rain since. I have also had a plumber out twice to repair a leaking tap, so I'm not exactly a heavy user. I have kept it going to ensure my boiler gets serviced each month but I am now starting to think that I should just put the £35 in with my savings instead and deal with any breakdowns as they come up. What are people's thoughts on this? Is it a risk worth taking or should I just continue with the monthly payments and security?

Not worth the money. As most people would recommend on here - put your money in a bank/building society account instead. If something does go wrong, you can hire a competant plumber/Central Heating technician to repair it.
The BG technicians I have seen aren't very knowledegeable. They seem to be using many apprentices now.
If you want the peace of mind of home cover, consider an alternative company such as Homeserve or AA Home Emergency Response. If my post hasn't helped you, then don't click the 'Thanks' button!0 -
I have got the boiler and radiator cover now, use to have the full cover for everything but cannot afford it now. I do find the boiler cover good, had to call them out last Saturday as no heating and they were there within a couple of hours and mended the boiler, was pleased Id got the cover with it being a weekend would probably not have got anyone out until Monday if I used a local company.0

I also would cancel and save the money, but i disagree with Myser do not touch Homeserve with a barge pole they are worse than useless........0

could not agree more....
Also be aware of taking a policy out with certain companies as they just use homeserves engineers. Look carefully at their terms and conditions0 -
Disagree with Myser. Just because he/she's had a bad experience, doesn't mean we all have. I've had nothing but good service from BG Engineers.
That being said, always worth looking around as you could probably find a cheaper quote than that elsewhere.
Always check terms and conditions with whoever you look at though as different companies offer different cover levels.0 -
Regardless of good service,(which I always had when I was with BG) to pay £414 a year is, IMO, way too expensive. - albeit when you say you are leaving they will doubtless offer a 10% reduction.0

That's exactly what they did but to be fair to the woman I spoke to, when she realised I wasn't going to change my mind, there was no hard sell.0 -
It all boils down to the boiler history.
Some people will never call out or very rarely.... how about one with an excess??
Some boiler breakdown all the time.... i saw one boiler needing a PCB, pump and a pressure relief valve.... now for £260 id say that was a bargain.
Their are other companies, but what exactly do they cover? what will they, wont they cover.
People dont often look / read.... then moan when the !!!! hits the fan.Promo codes are never always cheaper..... isnt that right EuropCar?0 -
Hi,
I got a quote from nPower and what ever Southern Electric are called, they both worked out cheaper.
I then went back to BG and said I wanted to leave, and after being left on hold for a while, I think they came back with a 25% discount.
In the end I went with nPower, as they offered back half my premiums, if I don't call them out.
If you do change suppliers, let them overlap, so when nPower come round and do the first service, and they find a problem, you can get the old supplier to fix it for free.
Cheers0 -
You get what you pay for and thiat is especially true in this market. By all means try the other cheap providers but I promise you you won't get the same service, it all boils down to what you want. First point of call is to attempt to screw down the renewal price to the bottom line.0
