0845 numbers - Job Centre

Just got to vent. Just put in my claim for JSA and tried to phone the job centre to rearrange my appointment, but the number they provide is 0845. I tried searching for alternative number but the 2 it came up with don't work anymore! So I phoned them, they put me through and no one picked up!
Why does the jobcentre think it's ok to charge people who have most likely got very little money with high phone call charges? I'm better off getting the bus to the job centre to tell them in person!

I agree with you,I dont mind 0845,or 0870,i get these free on my phone package, but the one I hate is 0844,and NDR use it,a debt company, making money out of low income people,or no income0

Go get the bus and tell them in person then if it's cheaper. That's life. You can't have everything free.0

0845 are local rate calls, so not expensive premium rate calls. Plus on the majority of land line phone plans, such as with BT, these calls are actually free, as they are included in the price plan. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -

No sympathy there then for Sharon and us all being Ripped Off by Con Companies making money just out of your telephone call to them.
Why on earth some people come to a Money Saving Forum I have not a clue.
We should all know the below web site....but if you do not.....please use it...

I had to ring the Job centre up and was on hold for 55 mins then they hungup on me! I rang back and was on hold for 35 mins and then 6pm came and the phone said they were closed. I rang on monday and was on hold 40 mins! I could only deal with my enquire over the phone. I feel for people who have to pay for there calls to 0845/0870 i am lucky i have it inculded in my landline calls. When i questioned why the long waits they said cut backs!Jan Wins: .0

No sympathy. Don't like it? Don't dial the number. Simples.0 -
Well the reason I had to rearrange an appointment was job related, I got 1 days work from my old job, also I don't have a working landline phone at the minute, so had to use my mobile phone!
I did eventually got through and managed to the geographical number once I got through to the job centre, so at least someone there is nice!0 -

It isn't always that simple, it depends on the type of appointment you are trying to change. The Jobcentre tries to make the main point of contact to be the phone rather than face-to-face - making a new claim, change in circumstances, etc. Can't just walk in off the street to be seen - need to have an appointment - and depending on who unbending your particular jobcentre is you may need an appointment to change an appointment!
But for future info all Jobcentres should have a phone that customers can use for free that will allow them to ring the 0845 number to make the appointments and also to contact tax credits etc.0 -

Perhaps soothyerboots can put me right....this person is obviously very Simply Bright (But low on Wattage):)
Picture it......you live 10 perhaps 100 or more miles from the Job Centre or a Bank or Utility Company and they use 0870 0845 or whatever so YOU have to pay THEM for contact.
Now then, one just HAS GOT TO SOMEHOW contact them about a complaint or whatever..
Short of WALKING (Middle of Winter....simples and perhaps dangerous) getting on a Train, Plane, (Maybe The Call Centre is in INDIA!!) Bus, or Car all costing please explain to us how to avoid the Rip Off telephone charges.
Maybe you would say ""Get on yer bike in the middle of winter in the pouring rain/snow whatever".
Please make your answer out of this particular pickle both constructive and simples.
I would suggest in that scenario.......
1. Perhaps calling the sales line and ask to be put through to the department you want. This does not work with a Job Centre.
2. Call the "Calling from Overseas number2. This does not work with a Job Centre.
3. Use Say No To 0870 may or may not do it, particularly for a Job Centre.
Many people don't realise that there are many phone providers offering cheaper calls to standard telephone numbers (those beginning with 01, 02 or 03), which don't apply to 0842, 0843, 0844, 0845, 0870, 0871, 0872 or 0873 telephone numbers. - Please see the links page and click on Cheapest Call Provider for price details. This shows that by using multiple providers, you can reduce your call cost on standard telephone numbers to as little as 5p fixed cost (regardless of duration), whereas the cheapest provider to 0871 numbers during the day that I am aware of charges 10p/min (+ 12.5p connection fee [with BT]) to call.
Worst still some companies that use these numbers are actually receiving a cut of the phone call costs.
If you have an 'inclusive landline calls' phone package, then it is very rare that 0844, 0845, 0870, and 0871 numbers are all included in your 'free minutes' allocation, unlike normal numbers. Many mobile phone packages also exclude freephone 0500, 0800 and 0808 numbers for your bundled minutes. BT and some other companies are starting to include 0845 and 0870, but this only applies to certain packages, and does not apply to 0844 and 0871 numbers.
Many companies advertise a separate number that can be used when calling from abroad - This usually begins in the format +44 - There is nothing to stop you using this number from the UK (as it is a normal rate telephone call), and will be included in any inclusive minutes provided by your landline or mobile phone provider. Many others will give you a standard number if you ask.
This site is all about listing these numbers, saving you money, without having to pay additional charges. To get started and find a particular number, please click on the 'Search to find an alternative number' link at the top of the page.
Thanks to everyone who has contributed to the site. Please continue to add any new numbers as and when you find them. You've heard the budget speech now you've been told. Some things in life are bad
They can really make you mad
Other things just make you swear and curse.
When you're chewing on life's gristle
Don't grumble, give a whistle
And this'll help things turn out for the best...
And...always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the light side of life...
If life seems jolly rotten
There's something you've forgotten
And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing.
When you're feeling in the dumps
Don't be silly chumps
Just purse your lips and whistle - that's the thing.
And...always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the light side of life...
For life is quite absurd
And death's the final word
You must always face the curtain with a bow.
Forget about your sin - give the audience a grin
Enjoy it - it's your last chance anyhow.
So always look on the bright side of death
Just before you draw your terminal breath
Life's a piece of sh**
When you look at it
Life's a laugh and death's a joke, it's true.
You'll see it's all a show
Keep 'em laughing as you go
Just remember that the last laugh is on you.
And always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the right side of life...
(Come on guys, cheer up!)
Always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the bright side of life...
(Worse things happen at sea, you know.)
Always look on the bright side of life...
(I mean - what have you got to lose?)
(You know, you come from nothing - you're going back to nothing.
What have you lost? Nothing!)
Always look on the right side of life...
