new driver - new car - best insurance??

Options
Hi there!!

I have just got a car!!! I am so excited but I need to get some insurance but have a couple of probs:

I cant drive yet  - I know its crazy to get a car when I cant drive but my neighbour (who I bought it off) has said she will give me a couple of lessons so long as I get lots of proper ones as it will get me used to the car...

I have absolutely no idea about insurance - I know I need to get some so I can go out in it (supervised) I have been on a couple of websites and the best so far is with Quinn Direct who have quoted £516.68 - is this good? counld I get it cheaper anywhere else??

No idea at all if that's a good price. If you're 17 and live in Sunderland, it's brilliant; if you're 45 and live in rural Gloucestershire, it's not... probably you're somewhere in between and so's the price. Also, what engine is in the car? 1.3 (60 horsepower) or 2.0 Cosworth (220 horsepower) :)

Quinn do tend to be very competitive for new drivers though so it's unlikely to be miles away from the mark.

My advice would be to follow Martin's car insurance cost cutting tips: basically, use Money Supermarket or Confused.com, then try Tesco (and if Tesco is cheaper for you try the other Royal Bank brands - Direct Line, Churchill, Privilege, etc.) as well as Quinn Direct and Elephant (and if Elephant is cheaper, try Diamond, Admiral and Bell who are also the same group).

Then make a note of all those prices and factor in Quidco cashback and see who's cheapest ten.

Also this is very important: Do not drive the car if it is not insured. Do not even park the car on the road if it is not insured as this is still "using" the car under the Road Traffic Act and if the police ever checked the car, or someone hit it, etc., you could still be prosecuted for having no insurance. The road includes the grass verge but not your private driveway if it is not adopted as part of the highway.

Don't use Highway, if you cancel the policy after less than 6 months, you only get back a bout 30%. The only way you can get back more is to re-insure with them again.
I found this out when I sold my van after 3 months. I would have lost £700 had my insurance company not told me up front about this. I ended up buying another van in the end. Apparrently, this is common practice in the insurance industry (CIS DON'T do this by the way).
