Violation: Parking on a Private Road & in Parking Spaces

I live in property, where the road is unadopted (by the council) and as such is Private. Our management agents (who are the freeholders) are useless and we are in the process of attempting to assume responsibility from them.

We have marked parking spaces (no numbers though), although there is no sign currently, stating that this is private road & bays.

The issue we have is with people parking in the bays and also on the road (which is a cul-de-sac). We have left notices on windscreens stating this is private road, yet they ignore it, claiming it is public & residents of nearby flats (although they are not). The police and council have said that they can't do anything.

So it looks like we are in aposition whereby we can't do anything, until we acquire the freehold and then appoint a new managing agent who can then do something, so these people are getting away with it and laughing at us.

Is there anything that we can do though, surely there must be something? Cheers

Maybe a rash of punctures/flats would get them to park elsewhere?

Or them finding their cars blocked in by neighbours cars?

If you bring in a private parking company you will regret it.
Theses are sharks that will try to extort as much money as possible from the residents themselves.
I would simply block them in, when they bang on the door, tell them you have had a few drinks and the car wont be getting moved until tomorrow.

    Thanks

Quentin, however, tempting that may sound... I think not.

Vax2002, I/we do not want to involve any private company, for the very reasons you allude to. There need to be signs put up, but this needs to be discussed with a new management agent.

My only concern with blocking someone in is the fact that they may damage my car then!

I don't get people at times. They have been told it's private land, yet still ignore us.

Maybe let some air out the tyres.

Club together with the other residents and get some gates fitted or fixed/lockable bollards for the bays.

What good are signs going to do, if they've already ignored you?

It's about as logical as villagers asking for speed bumps to be installed and then whining about the noise from trucks as they fly over them.

A knee jerk reaction, the most obvious reaction, is often not the best long term solution.

Your parking bays need to be marked out with the corresponding house/flat number and fitted with locking posts.

Bays are one thing, but parking on the road is another! Signs:- You start with the basics in life. You warn people about it being private and action will be taken. This is a deterrent and will put many off parking there. It is those that ignore this and persist parking. It is those on the road that are the hardest to prevent.

Unless you can stick up a big sign saying "Private Road resident parking only" people will assume it is a public road. Get the sign up first & then see how things change.

Exactly. which is what we intend to do once out managing agent issue is resolved. In the meantime, it's frustrating that such people continue to park here, as it saves them on parking costs when using the railway.

Big sticky notice to attach to window (don't block the drivers view though).

Take their numbers and start issuing your own tickets . The DVLA will give your the owners details for a small consideration. (If the drivers have an sense though they will ignore them)

Photograph people as they get out of their cars.

Hire a guy in dark glasses and a black suit to tell them not to park there.

Or back to matchsticks in the tyre valves.

Someone did stick a notice to the cars. But then we could get done for criminal damage! (see Tony Martin)

Issuing our own tickets - they know that if it's private, why should they pay! Unless there is someone to enforce it, ideally the managing agents (not a big bully bloke in a suit).

What will the law think about me using a tazzer!

Matchsticks - leaves evidence. Just need to de-flate tyres a bit.
