Would it need an optical output with the Sky box?

Not sure who you are directing that to?

With my suggestion of using a hifi instead you may or may not be able to use the optical out of a sky+ or sky HD box depending on the hifi (the one I linked to you cant)

It has correctly been pointed out that this (and the other suggestions) may create a lipsync issue. Where as a reasonable processor will have a delay option a stereo wont have. The more processing of the picture the TV is doing the bigger the risk is (plus the more stretched the TVs processor)

What model of TV do you have?

Try and get down to Richer Sounds or similar and have a listen to the sound bars on offer.

I listened to a small selection from Sharp, Panasonic and Yamaha.

Don't (!) check out the ysp-2200 yamaha soundbar or you might be £700+ lighter of pocket. :)

(Yeah, I forked out for one, and it *still* has those crappy spring loaded speaker clips, go figure).

I 2nd that. A decent soundbar would probably be better. I certainly wouldnt buy a 5.1 system for under 200 quid
Or you could buy a decent 2 channel amp and speakers
These are very decent speakers for the money:

Toshiba 46"UL863 Full HD 1080p LED Smart TV is the TV, it was purchased on internet deal of the day so unfortunately never got chance to listen to it though I did do reviews and sound didnt come up great
As I suspected, it has no phono audio out that I can see.
By all means test by connecting an amp to the Sky box if you can do it without spending any money.
As it stands I'll go with the others and suggest visiting Richer Sounds and listening to some soundbars.

Says it doesnt have a line level analogue out, it does have headphones out but that is far from ideal and it has an optical out. You could get a basic DAC to convert the optical to RCA, again Richer Sounds sell both very basic model for £30 or so and better models that will be about a hundred on top of that.

Richer Sounds do a reasonable range, mainly of slightly older systems but not only, at a reasonable price and so probably worth a visit.

I cant find if the audio out is optical or electrical.
Either way a digital connection is required for sound so the standard 2 channel amp suggestion is out

On the plus side, it has very low input lag, so lip sync shouldnt be an issue

According to that it DOES have analogue outs "Analogue audio (Cinch)"
But I dont see where it states anything is optical? It says it has a 'digital output' but doesnt state if its electrical or optical

  • That audio is a line in for if you use a DVI cable (the manual says - i thought it might be out too initially)

Why they have to make things so complicated Ill never know

The audio in is for component (not sure where youve got DVI from?)

Anyhoo: OP - you need an amplifier with an OPTICAL INPUT

  • i bought this when it was posted on hotdeals for £150 and think its a great looking bit of kit and sounds great.. i know its slightly over your £200 budget but if you shop around you may get the price down

I would be looking it for everyday use, obviously the cheapest the better dont want to be spending 200 or anything like that.

Might as well not bother then. Anything you get below that will sound like a dogs dinner and you might just as well set fire to your money.

If you really want decent sound, go to Richer Sounds. Look at the Onkyo range of amp/decoders and get a decent set of speakers with a powered sub woofer. £300 should be enough to get an entry level Onkyo AV receiver and some brand name speakers such as Pioneer or Yamaha.
