Can anyone recommend an oil based matt metal paint that comes in brown?
its for an interior staircase, and ive had Rustins suggested but that only comes in black...
Hammerite does a "smooth" version, but i cant tell from teh liststings ive seen if its oil based, or if smooth = matt!
Any suggestions gratefully received - cheers

Hammerie Smooth is gloss, and seems to be oil based:

However, it doesn't come in brown."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0 -

I take it is a metal staircase that you want painted and the "metal" does not refer to a metalic finish". If it is bare metal then you will need a paint system suitable for that and will usually consist of a primer followed by undercoat and finish coat. If it is already painted using orindary (alkyd) paint then just continue to use ordinary undercoat and finish coat. It is very important to prepare the surface very well with metal also painting metal has to be done with more care than with wood in my experience as there are sharper edges which can collect blobs of paint very easily.0

Hammerite smooth comes in all sorts of colours- if they don't do a brown per se, then you should be able to mix the colours pretty easily. It's a long time since I did colour theory, but a quick check on an arty website / Wikipedia should tell you which colours make brown (additive model)? Shouldn't be hard.0

Hi, yes its a metal staircase - its a spiral made of kee Klamp! So i dont think spray paint would work unfortunately. It is mostly currently painted, but we're adding new posts and fixings, so those will need doing from scratch so will need plenty of prep (a fun job i'm told...)
Thanks for the info that Smooth is gloss... not sure where i found the brown version, but it seems like i have alot of options in black but not brown, and gloss but not matt!
if i do end up settling for black, have people any oprions of rustins over hammerite and other options etc?0 -
The tubing and fittings could be made of different metals and/or have different finishes as KeeKlamp fittings could have been used with tubing supplied by others. This could affect choice of paint.0

Hammerite is solvent based not oil as are most metal paints. If the keeklamp is galvanised this again limits your choice of paint . Look for a solvent based high build vinyl paint. It should do the trick and is available in most colours, gloss and matt .0
