Weight Loss Surgery

Hiya
I've heard that The Birkdale Clinic (private hospital based in Rotherham, Liverpool and London) are now offering bands and balloons. They also offer band adjustments even if you previously had surgery elsewhere. The person to speak to is Gavin Royle on 0500 442222. He's a mine of information and is more than happy to discuss all the options, including finance and post-weight loss surgery. Hope this helps.

Both me and my mum had gastric bands fitted on 5th september LAST year.
We went over to belgium, not only because of the cost, but because the surgeon we used is one of the most experienced in the world and BUPA actually use him to train their bariatric surgeons
The cost was £2200 each, plus hotel stay, eurostar etc. I think it worked out at about £2600 each after taxi fares, hotel, travel etc.By February (5 months later) i had lost 4st 2lb. I then had a little problem where i had the band slightly overfilled and some food got stuck. I lost 1st 3lb in 10 days and was feeling quite poorly (put well over a stone back on now, but i think a lot of it was fluid loss anyway).
But as soon as i had some of the fluid taken out i was absolutely fine again
Since then i haven't had another fill as i've been enjoying my food too muchi'm sad to say!!! However, i know that the tool is there should i feel the need to use it
Plus the cost is a factor at £70 a fill, plus the £25 in petrol it costs me to get there and back.
I'm certainly nowhere near happy with my weight/shape/size... BUT i could live like this fairly comfortably if i had to stay like this for the rest of my life. When i was 4st heavier i couldn't have!
I started at 20st 2lb and i now weigh 16st 4lb. Gone from a size 26 to a size 18 (tight) or a 20 (loose), so very very happy still!
My mum has gone from 15st 7lb to 12st. A size 20/22 to a 14/16 and she looks like a different woman! She's going on holiday on sunday and she says it'll be the first time in her life when she knows for a FACT that she won't have to worry about being the biggest person on the beach
Anyway, if anyone wants to know anything in more detail, feel free to PM me!

this was me 2 years ago. i am now 5 weeks away from having a gastric bypass. what was 5 stone overweight stretched to 10 stone overweight and am borderline diabetic etc and have terrible knee arthritis. i am also severly restricted with my mobility due to a back problem and so cannot exercise. i am getting quite nervous now that i have a date. the whole process through the nhs took 14 months but i did fall through a crack in the system twice so should have had the surgery by now. i have looked on all of the support groups available but none of them really cover the pre op stage in any detail. is there anyone out there at the same stage as me that would be happy to share their experience with me and be a hand to hold for some mutual support?
Homealone - have you seen this site and specfically this post?

I would hate you to go through this major surgery and be like this lady (and many others) who DO gain weight again after their bypass. You will see that most of the replies are from people who are adamant that "they" will not gain their weight back. If "they" were so good at self-control they wouldn't be needing this op in the first place.;)
My friend met a woman on holiday who had had the op and had put it nearly all back on and she really is desperate because this was her "last resort".
If people try little bits of what they fancy (chocolate, sweets, cake & high calorie foods) and it goes down with no ill-effects then they try a bit more and so on and the weight goes back on again. All their good intentions and advise from their surgeon goes out the window!
Someone I know has had this op 2 years ago and is now gaining weight again because she is eating chocolate, crisps & so so on, yet she promised her surgeon that if he did the op she would avoid these foods completely and start eating healthier foods.:(
Sorry to be the bearer of negative news but you really do need to look at both sides of the coin. There are people on that site who say they have done all their "research thoroughly" they have their ops then they're on again asking questions like "can I drink alcohol" and saying they still crave sweet things and the most basic questions about foodstuffs which indicates they didn't do their research thoroughly.0 -

hi, sorry did not get back to you any sooner but your post had quite a bad effect on me. having rread every article posted on the site you suggested my head just went into over drive and not sure whether i have recovered yet. the operation date is march 26 and i was supposed to diet starting feb 26 and although i know how important this diet is and how possible cancellation hinges on it, i keep saying will start tomorrow. and i do to some level, i force a slimfast shake down me for breakfast and a meal replacement bar for lunch with water then from 6pm onwards its a downward spiral. with me ending my day at 3am the same way as i have for the last 6 years foraging in the kitchen for whatever i can find be it cake, biscuits, chocolates etc i feel so low today. have had my shake so far so on the right road but i am beginning to wonder if i am on some kind of self sabotage because i am now thinking more about my problems not ending with the op like the posts you showed me said. i am not an over eater so dont need a smaller stomach i am an emotional eater and the operation wont solve that so i am so upset and confused0

Sorry if it had a bad effect on you Homealone. I'm hoping you've been to see your GP or spoken to someone at your hospital because it is a huge decision to make if you're not 100% sure. I really, really hope you reach the decision which is right for you but remember it IS forever.
If people eat for emotional reasons then AFAIK they'll still crave those things afterwards that gives them a "buzz" and these are usually sweet foods. Even thought it makes them feel very ill, some people would still go through this to get their "fix".

I just came across this thread again. I notice that I responded back in 2007 - a few months after I had gastric band surgery. At the time I wanted to lose 4.5-5 stone and was just starting out on my weight loss journey.
I am now 3.5 years post-gastric band surgery. I have lost almost 8stone and now weigh less than I did when I was 18 (I am 41yrs old, 5 ft 5inches and weight 9stone). I am delighted with the outcome. I rarely feel hungry and food no longer dominates my life. Every aspect of my life has improved. I am much healthier, more confident and happy with myself. For years I hated my reflection and had very low self esteem. I am a new woman!:j
