Ryanair check-in and baggage - be aware

After my second Ryanair flight in two weeks let me share a few thoughts.. sorry if they have been said before.

Priority Boarding - be aware that a lot of people pay for this, so you won't be at the front of the queue, and the usual stampede still happens. Parents with children still get on first as well for free, but this seems to be a discretionary thing not a right.

On-line Check-in - seems like a great idea. Going to Dublin with only a brief case was a breeze, no check-in queue. I would use it again for short trips. BUT be very careful to ensure you comply with all rules - I saw people turned away at security, back to end of check-in ! I made the mistake of checking in for my return flight 24hrs in advance, as I didn't have web access when away. I thought I was being smart! Due to bad weather our flight was diverted to Shannon. I had a meeting arranged in Dublin and tried to get a later flight home. I had to make a new booking on a later flight at full cost of Euro250 because you cannot make a change to your flight once you have checked-in. I wonder what would have happened if my flight was cancelled? Have you still technically checked in for a flight that won't go?

Baggage - the queue for check-in on my last flight was terrible, and slow. This was due to enforcement of rules - hand baggage is limited to one bag less than 10kg, hold baggage 15kg. On way back from Shannon I saw people having to unpack suitcases to put items in to reduce handbag weight. They had bought gifts to take home. This then made the suitcase over the allowance - so an extra £5.50 charge over and above the £7 you pay on the website! All payable at another desk, with another queue!
Once you are through security and into duty free, the rules are miraculously changed - no-one weighs what you buy there. It would hit the airport profits too much to enforce cabin baggage rules, but it enhances Ryanairs to do it. Or am I just suspicious?
Oh dear! this does sounds like a rant. I know Ryanair can say that it is all clear in T&C on web, but it does earn them a nice amount of extra cash by allowing the public to make mistakes.
Clear BIG PRINT rules on email confirmation would help reduce queues and unforseen costs.

  • Also, if you travel as a couple, both with a hold bag each, you cannot offset the weight of one against the other - if one weighs 11kg & the other is 19kg you'll get penalised (30+euros) for the overweight bag. You know what's going to happen next - weigh the passengers!! (though, personally speaking I think it'd be a great idea if lighter passengers got a bigger luggage allowance than heavier passengers....Hmmm!)
