credit card scam?

had a phone call earlier saying that someone had tried to use my card in america, and the card would have to be cancelled. they didn't ask for my card number and they knew the last 2 transactions on the card, asked me to confirm them.then they said is your address still blah blah and i said yes. i asked if they'd got details from internet and they said they didn't know could be skimmed in a shop.
wasn't worried until i thought surely they shouldn't need to confirm my address and they should know the card hasn't been used in a shop for months. is this a scam to confirm some details they've got from somewhere a bit worried now in case i've fallen for a scam .

Did they ask you to confirm the numbers on the back off the card?

Them, Is the number on the back 345?

    You, no it is 421
  • no they didn't ask for any card numbers. They told me everything correctly ie transactions and address, never actually gave me any card numbers at all, the only thing they asked for was if i could be contacted on any other phone number but i said no.

You should maybe double check by phoning the card issuer's customer service line yourself and asking to be transferred to the security people. They will quickly confirm if this is genuine.

You can always phone your credit card provider and ask them to confirm that they did indeed call you.

phoned up and it is genuine as i've only used it on amazon and to top up on orange in the last 3 months i'm assuming they have managed to get the details from one of these places.

Good thought. Do a virus and spyware check OP (if you haven't already).

It's extremely unlikely that this is any kind of scam as the only information they gleaned was that you knew the last two transactions on your card and that you still lived at the address on file.

It's hard to see how any of this information could benefit a criminal - if you had moved all that would happen if they tried to use your card is that the transaction would fail.

In addition, CC companies do phone to check and verify certain transactions if they decline them for certain reasons.
There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.

One thing I always make a point of doing when I get an unexpected call from my bank is refuse to complete any security checks, but tell them I'll call them back on my banks usual number, and ask who I should ask to be transferred to. Once I've called them, then I'll happily complete whatever checks are needed.
