How long after leaving a job do you have to wait?

Be gentle with me please...
I quit my job on 31st December, and as of yet havent applied for any benefits. I *think* you have to wait a certain amount of time after having made yourself 'voluntarily unemployed' before you can claim JSA, but Im not sure how long it is, or even if Im right?
Anyone got any ideas?

You should register straight away, so that at least you get your NI credits. Then they tell you how long you are sanctioned for, I would get it done tomorrow if I was you.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
according to another thread on here, the sanction time doesn't start until you claim. so in the case of the other poster they'd waiting 6 months, only to find they had another 6 months to wait because the sanctions only kicked in when they claimed.Birthdays are good for you. Statistics show that the people who have the most live the longest.

Usually 26 weeks, depends on the circs if you had a valid reason they may be lenient.0

Well what do you expect? You voluntarily quit a job in this economy, thinking the rest of the country would happily pay you benefits?
What planet are you on, pal?0 -
I was once offered the chance to resign, or I would have been fired. I claimed benefits, and was honest, and got benfits straight away. If you have particular circumstances you would be better telling them. You never know until you try.
I'm sorry you are having a tough time, and do ignore anyone who tries to stamp all over you. I don't know your circumstances, but I suspect that most people would not quit a job unless there was a good reason.
The other side to it, of course, is to look for another job. And if there is a reason why you can't do that then you're possibly not capable of working at the moment and should get help in that direction? Sorry, I'm possibly speaking out of turn here, but I'm just trying to help.0 -

Ive had an interview a day for the last 2 weeks, so Im 100% looking for work!
I worked 2 jobs over the Christmas period, so I managed to save a bit of money which is seeing me through, but thats rapidly running out, so just wanted to know where I stood re benefits, should the worst come to the worst.
(And yes, there was a VERY good reason why I left. I just dont really want to go into it here....)You lied to me Edward. There IS a Swansea. And other places.....

Thanks for asking this question Vik6525, I've had to resign recently and had been considering what my options might be should I not be able to find another job. Luckily I have found one but not signed a contract yet. All being well I should be able to start soon after I leave my current job.
My reason for leaving is that my working hours have changed to hours I can't get childcare for. Does anyone know if that's considered a valid reason?0 -
OP have you rang the benefits line to find out where you stand? It's better to regret something I did do than to regret something that I didn’t. :EasterBun0
