Play.com returns policy

I just wanted to bring something to everyone's attention which I think is 'bad faith' regarding the policies of play.com.
I bought an item just before Christmas and it was faulty so I arranged to return it. My printer was not working so I had to pay for the postage myself but it was quite clear when going through the process that because of the size of the item I would be reimbursed with £2.40 for the postage.
About 10 days later the refund was on my account and my credit card but without any postage included so I emailed them and they said the below:
We are sorry to hear that the correct postage was not refunded to your account for your order for Limit IP-CR100 Docking Station Alarm Clock Radio.
Our default postage is set at £1.40 and as your refund is over this amount we will need to see a receipt showing the amount paid. We will refund you for the remaining postage cost.
I don't have the receipt anymore (obviously my fault) but isn't this policy of "no refund for postage unless asked for" in bad faith? Basically it seems that there is no problem refunding the item price but no postage is refunded unless they are chased for it.
This is the second time I send something back and the last time they did not refund me anything but since it was under a quid I didn't even ask them for it (again; my fault). I was wondering if play.com does that with all their returns and if so then I believe that to be slightly dishonest, after all if they say in their returns policy that postage is refunded why is not not done automatically? Has anyone else experienced the lack of postage refund or I'm just unlucky? (busy period etc)
Thanks in advance
Alex

You really need to ask Play.com why they don't refund postage automatically.
I think I know the answer, and I imagine you do too.
It's simply to avoid paying it.
Not sure there is anything unlawful though.0 -
They've always done it and yes it is poor IF the stamp price is shown on the parcel. Taking DVDs as an example they are going on a parcel being sent RD LL and costing around 1.40 which is fine until you post back a box set...In the game of chess you can never let your adversary see your pieces0
