I really like this by Ellen Goodman-

Normal is getting dressed in clothes that you buy for work and driving through traffic in a car that you are still paying for - in order to get to the job you need to pay for the clothes and the car, and the house you leave vacant all day so you can afford to live in it. :p

    Yes...I kinda like that to:)

Havent been here since I posted this thread....good to hear everyones views!

I do notice a lot, that people always assume the unemployed are always "sitting about doing nothing"? Why do they come to that conclusion, as its a bit of a generalisation. Many folks define themselves by work and its as if they couldn't function if they are not having this structure to their lives. Perhaps they think that because someone is unemployed without work, then they must surely have "nothing else to do". Serious lack off imagination if that is the case. I do voluntary work, take care of my gran, read books, garden in the summer, walk, take photographs, dabble in art/crafts etc...in between looking for work. So, I wont be found loafing on a dfs sofa watching Jezza Vile anytime soon:rotfl:

Yep - sounds like a pretty idylic lifestyle and just fine and dandy - but not on benefit money.
  • Maybe so. But however they managed it, if they're on benefits and can afford to take foreign holidays, they're getting paid too much.

Holidays can be very cheap, I got a return ticket to Berlin for less than £30 with Ryanair a couple of years ago and the hostel was £10 a night. Food was cheap and alcohol was 0.99cents in some shops!! I spent about £90 in total (cheaper than 3 nights anywhere in the UK) and I had a blast.

I wasn't claiming benefits but all it would take is £30 put aside for 3 months to be able to afford that holiday again which I could manage with JSA. It would be 3 months of walking everywhere and eating tesco value biscuits for breakfast, lunch and dinner but it would be possible.

...and they had free internet in the hostel so I still could have applied for work!

Its called being productive and keeping occupied....if I was lying on a sofa drinking lager all day I would be getting called lazy...you just cant win either way!

Yeah, looking after an 88yr old with dementia sure is idyllic. NOT!!

You're not working for nothing tho! It means you're not sponging off the state and tax payers.

Are you looking for another job if you hate yours so much?

Wow, how did I miss this! I don't really think my post warranted that much aggression - my whole point is that I'm NOT "sponging off the state and tax payers", I'm doing a job that is making me ill, with nothing to show for it, and no way out, so that I DON'T HAVE TO SPONGE off the taxpayer and have to answer to the likes of you.

I have been seeking alternative employment for several months now, thank you for asking. If it helps at all, I'm in the final stage of recruitment for one particular role I've applied for recently and I am awaiting the outcome. I'm not completely irresponsible and wouldn't chuck a job before getting a new one, to sit on benefits forever. I don't condone it either, but that's how it is these days.

So get a job and fund it yourself. It wouldn't need to be a well paid job if you can do all this on benefits so it's a win all round :)

As for your gran, I'm sorry about that. My gran had Alzheimers and I know how difficult it is. But my dear old ma and I looked after her for years - and both in employment.
