Powergen - Should I leave?
Options
I've been with Powergen for years and I got a visit from an nPower rep one evening. He was telling me how great nPower were and how cheap they were and how I could save xx a year.
I have a rule, I never ever sign up for anything on the doorstep, so I got rid of him but it did start me thinking. So off I popped to uSwitch. Sure enough Powergen were one the expensive electricity suppliers and they are currently charging (according to uSwitch) 18.018p per kWh. So the top one was, at the time, EDF, who are now charging 13.7p per kWh.
EDF have been for forthcoming and we had a nice chat about their prices on the phone, and quite honestly I'm very very tempted to switch now. However, this price decrease has been announced by British Gas, and Powergen are likely to follow suit. So, do I wait and see what happens or drop Powergen for EDF?
As a side note; I am not on a duel fuel tarif, I get my gas from British Gas, price fixed until 2010, so I'm happy to stay put for now, but my leccy prices have gone up quite considerably.

My mum's on Staywarm and phoned Powergen today after she got a letter saying they were going to put up her direct debit to £120pm.
The girl told her to wait two weeks as Powergen would be making an announcement then and they could look to see if something was better.
Npower would be £35pm cheaper for my mum but we'll wait a couple of weeks.0 -
As someone who has earnt a living in the industry for over 20 years, I would suggest that buying both from the same supplier will save you money. Staywarm ( I worked for Powergen from 1993 to 31st December 2006) cannot be sustained in the current economic and energy aware market (and if I were a betting man, I would suggest that the product could be well be scrapped). My personal view is that call BG and ask them what they could do if you switched. Powergen's service is improving, but their prices may not be as keen as someone like BG who are losing customers. No Debts, Just one whopping great Mortgage!0

I have just dumped Powergen and gone back to british gas Dual fuel. Their prices go down in March. 17% I read somewhere"If toast always lands butter-side down, and cats always land on their feet,
what happens if you strap toast on the back of a cat and drop it?"0 -
Martin's take on the situation at the moment is here:-

....and it's don't switch just yet.0 -
No point in switching yet. All suppliers will be bringing down prices - I think powergen are probably holding back at the moment to see how much other prices are reducing then they will announce - Makes sense in one way as they can then put the biggest reduction in place.
As a way to prevent customers from leaving 2 products have been released -
Electricity / Gas Guarantee (Or Energy Guarantee if you have dual fuel with them) and Energyonline Extra saver.
These both work out to be cheaper then Bgas Alternatives at the moment (Domestic and Click Energy).0
