Hi
my daughter has a Sony vaio laptop model PCG-7184M and has it about 2 years with no problems.
Tonight when she turned it on a notice came up saying:
"the installed battery may not be properly connected to the computer, or may not be compatable with the computer, click ok to enter hibernate mode and remove and insert the battery"
She removed the battery and put it back in and the same notice came up
anyone got any ideas what is happening?
Thanks

2 years is not a bad life for a laptop battery depending on how its used, for example, if left connected to power 24/7 then I wouldn't be surprised. Although the manner of the fail is unusual; these batteries do have chips to control/monitor battery use, just another thing that may fail.
However, there is one thing to try before buying a new battery. Remove both the power cord & battery. Depress on on/off switch, and keep it pressed for 20-30 seconds. This will dissipate any build up of any static. Reconnect and try again.
hope it works!0 -

Silly question, but does the laptop work when it's plugged into the mains? and is the charging light on. Remote possibility that the power supply could be faulty.
Otherwise http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SONY-VAIO-VGN-NW20EF-VGP-BPS13B-Q-LAPTOP-BATTERY-/110647328919?pt=UK_Computing_LaptopsAccessories_LaptopBatteries&hash=item19c31840970 -
thank you both...
not a silly question at all steve, I did think of that but the mains supply is fine. Thanks for the link0 -
Help again please!
I bought a new battery and the notice still comes up
"the installed battery may not be properly connected to the computer, or may not be compatable with the computer, click ok to enter hibernate mode and remove and insert the battery"
As I mentioned earler the 'wireless' light isn't on even though the switch is on, so it probably can't pick up the internet...any ideas...apart from open the bin and drop it in
thanks0 -
just done a trouble shoot and it came up with that the following problems have been found
the itel(R) WiFi link 5100 AGN adapter is experiencing driver -or hardware related problems
The Marvell Yukon 88E8057 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller adapter is experiencing driver -or hardware related problems
there's is nothing wrong with our router as my laptop is working

make sure you dispose of it properly and not just "in the bin" , try local supermarket and Tesco's in particular as they will probably have a battery recycle drop off
