DSLR Camera

can anyone reccommend a decent entry level DSLR camera for someone who would like to take up photography, and if they like it, may consider a part time self employed business....

thanks in advance.

Huh? You expect to simply pick up a DSLR and then get into the photography business?

Sorry to rain on your parade, but unless you are extremely gifted, it isn't going to happen.

A good first step on that road is to join your local camera club.
    College courses are also available.

Someone who hasn't any idea what camera to pick, and who wants to set up as a photographer shortly after someone else picks a camera for them...... wow.

What kind of photography do they propose being self-employed at?

Come on how hard can it be, all you have to do is press a button...

No wonder there are so many £100 wedding togs on Gumtree if this is the attitude
  • If you want to start any sort of photography business you are not looking at an entry level dSLR. At a minimum you should be looking at the prosumer level with a view to quickly buying a second professional camera and using the prosumer just as a backup.

Ignoring the comment about wanting to become a pro, ultimately with dSLRs you are buying into a system. You buy a kit to start with then you add a macro lens, then an UWA or large telescopic then maybe a flash gun etc etc. In a few years time you then replace then come to replace the camera body and you have the choice of staying with the brand and being able to continue to use 90% of the other items you have or having to sell everything and starting again from scratch.

The two biggest brands are probably still Canon and Nikkon, both have reasonable entry level models. Sony are interesting as (at least their middle range and above) they build IM into the camera thus all lenses benefit from it (though many say it is not as good as the in lens IM of Canon and Nikkon) but their range of lenses etc are less.

One thing to certainly do is get down to a shop and try holding them. A lot of men find the entry level cameras feel very small and uncomfortable in their hands (and some women find the large pro cameras uncomfortable as they are too big)

Yep and those muppets that use them are the first to cry when they realise the pictures from the disposable cameras they left on the tables are of a better quality than the guy that called himself a pro.

Skill and experience is all you need to be a photographer, and no amount of money will buy those. As for equipment you can spend 10k on it but if you don't have the other 2 the final result will still be !!!!!.

I have seen plenty of decent togs using a D40 (under £300) producing stunning images whilst I have seen the "equipment" togs sporting a D3s (over 3k) producing below par images. A change of glass can make the world of difference too and thats where most will spend their money with the costs of the lens being more than the body in some cases.

If your going to be a pro you do need reliable equipment with backups but everyone who owns a camera at some point think they can be a pro. Its a saturated market with few decent togs and plenty of £100 wedding pro's on the market.
Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.
