I've found Wilkinsons pretty cheap for low energy bulbs

The regular 40, 60 and 100W bulbs are vanishing from shops. They're being replaced with 28, 42 and 70W halogen bulbs respectively. Halogen bulbs use less electricity and emit the same light, they're dimmable and last about twice as long so the slightly higher price makes them about the same really. So, I think you'd be better looking for 28W candle bulbs instead. You can buy them in most hardware shops or supermarkets and it won't cost £36 for four or six!

All of the long life filament bulbs I've seen so far have thicker filaments, which also reduces light output as they don't get as hot. Well, there's the same amount of heat but more filament for it to be within, so the surface temperature is lower. So, it's a trade off between light output per watt and bulb life really. With the latest halogen bulbs claiming to last 2,000 hours and emitting more light than ever before, it may make more sense with the high cost of electricity to avoid the long life bulbs.
