When we got married, my husband’s account became our joint account, for paying bills. Most of the bills were already coming out of that account anyway. As I was trawling through the online statements trying to work out why we were so skint, I noticed a payment of £17.99 to ntl going out monthly in addition to the payment I was expecting.

When my husband investigated this, he discovered that ntl had been charging us £17.99 per month for jut over two years for an internet service that we did not have! He rang them and asked for a refund, and was assured that a cheque would be in the post. 5 weeks later, no cheque, lots of telephone calls, and mucho frustration.

I found out that under the Direct Debit Guarantee, we could ask the bank to reimburse us straightway, so my husband finally gave up with ntl (or Virgin) and rang the bank.

I don’t know the details of who he spoke to, but they were obviously very helpful, as they found more payments that had gone out than we had calculated, and the reimbursement was in the account by the end of the day. Now that’s what I call service.

I’m sure it’s only what should happen, but I am really impressed and just wanted to share. Shame on ntl, hurrah for HSBC!

I have had this before with a hosting company, taking out money every month.

HSBC did the same instantly on the phone... it isn't down to the person you spoke to, they all have the ability to do that!

I was very impressed too however.
