reclaim ppi not attached to mortgage

had back in 1999 mortgage (i think) with lloyds tsb and we had face to face insurances sold to us by scottish widows which we kept when we changed mortgage etc etc, however when we sold in 2009 we noticed that we would never have been paid out as my partner was self employed and we told the adviser at the time and he said was more important to have this insurance then?? i also had a good sickness scheme.... since this was not attached to the mortgage at time of selling (alliance and leicester) can we still go ahead with a claim??
thankyou

You would complain to whoever sold you the policy.
However, being self-employed is not necessarily a reason that a claim on the policy would be refused and if it did cover your partner then the adviser was correct as your home would have been at risk if they had fallen ill and could not keep up repayments.
Can you also prove you had a "good sickness scheme". We can all say that. I saw a case recently where somebody claimed to get sick pay as a local government employee. I found they were actually working for a charity which had been contracted to provide child care for a local authority. Their terms and conditions were set by the charity and did NOT include anything more than statutory sick pay.0 -
Scottish Widows is a life assurance company and do not offer PPI or MPPI. They offer life assurance, critical illness cover, pensions, investments and permanent health insurance.
So, your complaint is destined for failure. Its a bit like complaining to your household insurer that you think your car insurance was mis-sold.
Plus, all Scottish Widows products sold by LTSB are done under an advice process where a factfind, needs analysis and suitability report would have been completed and issued. So, they should have a good audit trail about your circumstances, needs and the reasons why it was recommended. (unlike most PPI plans).I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). this is really confusing me as we would not have taken out a mortgage without some sort of payment protection? since we sold in 2009 and stupidly destroyed all paperwork i cannot see where the ppi was, i;m sure that scottish widows sold us accident, sickness and unemployment insurance? is this not the same then? not knowing this would all come about would have kept paperwork, as when sorting to get rid off it said in the very very small print that if you were self employed payouts would be affected, which we took to mean never would have got a payout, i had 2 insurances with scottish widows of which one yes was a life insurance .... will we have no claim then?0

That statement then counters any complaint you had if you did have PPI and you made a complaint. You cant say you wouldnt have taken a mortgage without it then complain you have it.i;m sure that scottish widows sold us accident, sickness and unemployment insurance? is this not the same then?
They cant sell you what they dont have. Scottish Widows are a life assurance company. PPI is offered by general insurance companies. Some life companies have a general insurance insurance subsidiary (e.g. Aviva) but SW do not. From memory, I believe it was Pinnacle who did the MPPI from LTSB back in 1999.
If you had a Scottish Widows plan that was protection based then it would either be life assurance, critical illness cover and/or permanent health insurance.
It should also be noted that the MPPI sold by Lloyds in 1999 did cover the self employed.will we have no claim then?
You have no compliant as you would be complaining about a product that doesnt apply. Their response will be along the lines of that your complaint is not applicable as you do not hold the product you are complaining about.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). That wont be to do with Lloyds.
you are going to struggle on this one as if you do complain, you need to complain to the seller of the insurance. You need to identify what you have/had and the reasons you have for complaining about them if there is anything to complain about.
Statistically, most people are not mis-sold. Indeed, with mortgages (unlike loan/credit card) the figures are very low. So, you are more likely to have everything correct than you are wrong.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only.
