Returning a free gift with no labels

Hi, would appreciate some advice as I'm not sure what rights I have. I recently bought a barbour jacket from an online store which after a few weeks I noticed was faulty, I returned it, got another which was also faulty (how lucky am I?!) and sent that back but this time requested a refund. They agreed to that but say they need back the free gift I got with the jacket - a merino/cashmere scarf - with labels. Well although I have the scarf, unworn, it is without the paper tags which were thrown away just after Christmas. I am perfectly happy to return it but worried they'll refuse the return because of the lack of labels and charge me. Can anyone help?

The jacket and scarf should be considered a single 'bundle' rather than two separate items. As the 'bundle' is faulty (albeit only one part of it) you should be able to return the whole lot, regardless of missing tags.Competition wins: Where's Wally Goody Bag, Club badge branded football, Nivea for Men Goody Bag0

If you didn't agree to receive the free gift you are under no obligation to return it. If, for example, the jacket was advertised as coming with a free gift or there was an option on checkout to add it, then it would be deemed you agreed to accept it and thus it should be returned. If they just added it to the parcel with no prior knowledge on your side then you would not need to return it as it wasn't part of the original contact.
Either way the removal of a tag from a scarf isn't a reason for a retailer not to provide you with a refund for faulty goods. In the game of chess you can never let your adversary see your pieces0 -
Thank you both for your replies, I am feeling a lot happier about the situation and have this afternoon posted the scarf back.0
