Bought car, no V5C

I bought a used car from an independent garage in December. I haven't yet received the V5C document from the DVLA. I suspect he hasn't sent it off, as I also have not received the warranty documentation and may have been lied to regarding the number of former keepers (both are separate issues). I never saw the V5C when I bought the car (and rather naively just accepted the V5C/2 without looking at the rest of the document).
I've filled in a V62 and will sent this off with the V5C/2 section, but have a few questions:
1. The V5C/2 originally had the garage's name so they could tax the vehicle using their fleet insurance policy. The salesman used tippex to cover up their address and wrote mine over the top. Will the DVLA be ok with this?
2. What do I do if stopped by the police in the meantime? I won't have any proof that the vehicle is registered in my name.
3. Has anyone else been in a similar situation before?

On the New Keeper Supplement it says to contact DVLA if you have not received your V5 within 6 weeks of transfer of ownership. Clear advice.0
