hi i dont know whether i am on the right forum, but i wonder if anyone can give some advise, last night i drove into wolverhampton to go to a show, it is the first time i have ever drove through the town, i had a male passenger who was directing me where to park (not a good idea) unfortunately we missed a few turns here and there and finally found the car park. later on he told me that i had gone over a red light in all the confusion, i later walked back to where it was and on top of the lights there was a little camera of some kind, i am now wondering if i will be fined and points on my clean license.:(

Unlikely, the only Redlight cameras I know off are like this.

They stand on poles behind the lights so they take a photo of your rear.
On the top of the lights are detectors for seeing if cars are waiting or pedestrians waiting.0 -
Just check your local council/police area red light camera map. This is the one for my area back home. Your area will have one, just Google for it.

As mx5huggy says - red light cameras are usually well before the junction / crossing to get a good picture of you crossing the line.0

The cameras on top of the lights are traffic detectors only, you have nothing to worry about.
Red light speed cameras look similar to Gatso cameras but they are thinner, and positioned behind the junction. If you went through one at night while the light was red you would notice two intense flashes of light.0 -
yes definitely sounds like a MVD (Microwave Vehicle Detector) which is only used to increase/decrease the timings of the traffic lights. What was the speed of the road? I ask this because MVDs cannot be used on roads over over 30mph. (35mph,85th percentile to be exact)0

i would think the speed limit would be 30mph as i was in the main area of the town, and i was not doing that speed, as i did not know where i was going. my main concern was going over the lights on red and being photographed and fined

You'll know you're in the clear in around a fortnight. Are you the registered keeper and have you owned the vehicle and lived at your current address for a reasonable amount of time?
The police must serve a Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP) on the registered keeper so it will arrive, in the normal course of post, within fourteen days of the date of the alleged offence.
If you don't receive a NIP in such circumstances, you should be in the clear.I am a mortgage broker. I'd sell the car and leave the country, just to play it safe......
No, it doesn't sound like a red light camera from you description of it!0 -
