MOT failure, advice please.

I took my car to be MOT'd, got a call from the garage and put it this way I can name less things right with the car than wrong. It failed miserably.

I just paid for the MOT and brought the car home:o rang my husband and he is convinced that the garage has made most of the things up.

I got a printout and loads of things are listed as **dangerous**

I have done 3000 between MOT's and cant belive my car went from no advisorys last year to what I see now as scap??

My husband thinks I should go for a second opinion at a different garage, I am happy to do this but if I take it for a new test will the different garage be aware of what my car failed on at the garage today due to the big failed printout I got today ? I know there is an MOT database, is this the sort of info held on it ?

Take it to you council MOT centre if you have one near you
  • make model and year of the car.

was it MOT'd at a national chain of centers?

what was listed as a fail and what was listed as advisory.
  • Definately listed as a fail...unanimous, the advisorys were endless too !! One of them being I have run flat tyres on ??

Just odd that in 12 months and 3000 miles it can go from a perfect pass to ready for the scrap heap?

No council test Centres by me:o

17 year old Lexus with 100000 on the clock

I am not denying that there will be problems with a car this age just want a second opinion so wondered if the next garage would be aware of what it failed on today ?? I have never been to this garage before so worried it could have been a case of "they saw a lady coming" BTW wasnt a national chain , just a local garage that is near to me , went for convenience.

As far as I know they won't know what it has failed on until they log it onto the system after they do they test. I could be wrong.

I would take it for another MOT somewhere else for sure if I had *loads* of failure items.
  • another vote for taking it to another garage, when they do the MOT if there is significant differences between that one and your current one, let them look at the current one and pass comment may just be that the MOT tester that day was having an extremely picky day.

Take it to the place you had it done last year, if thats possible. If it's done just 3000 and you have looked after it I can't see how it would suddenly go *bad*.
  • Thanks for your help.

I will take it for a 2nd opinion, just my concern was the 2nd garage would see what it failed on and make a decision based on the failure from the first garage ( in hope of getting business for repairs ) as opposed to making their own decision.

So I really want to know if 2nd garage would/could find out ?? I hate embarrassing situations ( like the one today when I just paid and scarpered )

The next garage will log on the vehicle details at the start of the test to get any special test advisories for that vehicle - e.g. some vehicles have special details for testing the handbrake, or unusual warning light sequences.

Because of this, I think they will probably see what details are already entered on the system.

In any case, I wouldn't put it in for another MoT, I would find a decent small garage and ask them to give you an opinion on the fail list. They may tell you they can get it through an MoT for a reasonable price. A lot of things on the advisory list can look worse than they actually are.... what did the advisory say exactly? (And what car is it?)
