At my son's Secondary school, you make the cheque payable to X school Fund, so I know his school must get a %. Jumpers & ties are only available via the school, though I have found an independant shop that does an extremely good copy of the embroidered logo on the jumper and bought them a couple of £s cheaper there;). PE kit you don't have to have school issue but you do have to have the same colours -which you can't find in any store! Unfortunately for school they left the suppliers tag on my son's kit, so I've now discovered the website to order directly.;) Son's school doesn't offer 2nd hand either BUT the feeder Primary my younger child attends does do a 2nd hand uniform stall at its annual summer fayre, and will sell the local Secondary schools unform as well as their own. That's an option worth looking at. As someone else has said, people will end up with spare uniform, when your only/younger child outgrows it, they've got to do something with it. Check the local ads in the shop/paper or even put your own 'wanted' sign in.

Would the school really know if she's wearing thermal underwear? Boys and girls at the secondary school here wear shirt, v necked jumper and tie, a vest really wouldn't be noticed.

DS is still wearing the polo shirts she got in Yr 7. :o Now in year 11 & did get a replacement freecycle sweatshirt a couple of years ago. :D Will admit the VAT annoys me but at least the uniform is a decent quality and will last and the only must haves are branded polo shirts & sweatshirts. The other school has gone back to shirt & ties but still not OTT cost wise.

I believe that schools have to be inclusive.

My DD goes to a selective school and at every trip etc. they will say that if you are experienceing difficulties paying and are on various benefits please get in touch.

It's a while since I worked in a school but I think the reason they offer support for trips is to be inclusive. If schools are doing 'trips' (especially in school time) they should be to enhance learning and so part of the curriculum. If any child is barred from the curriculum by cost then that's against the law (I believe unless it's changed). I know some schools get around it by offering alternatives to the children 'left behind' which is hardly what's meant to happen.

Nowadays I think mine would have been diagnosed with ADHD. She was a nightmare, always in my face, never shut up, always lying and stealing, often hiding or breaking everything that belonged to me. She had tantrums and had huge arguments and sometimes fights with my mum. She used to have screaming arguments with other people's parents too.

My mum always just sighed and said 'oh go and play' ... I used to dream of silence, of having a place where I could read a library book without anyone invading my space.

I was very sulky and whiny, kept saying everything wasn't fair :rotfl:

I spent a lot of time with my younger brothers and often slept in their room on the floor. I was a very prickly, over-sensitive child.

don't get me started on school uniform, i could rant for hours,
my son goes to a grammar school im a single working mum so it costs a fortune, especially 3 different PE kits  i have raynauds so i know how bad it is, just typing on the laptop i start to feel my fingers go cold.
it doesn't matter how much you write/sew names in uniform it does get stolen or taken home by mistake (many mums dont send it back in again).
we have only one shop to buy it all from it, as the lot has to have the badge on it (even pe shorts) and suprise suprise cant buy the badge seperatley.
then theres the cost of the trips £384 to Germany (whats wrong with the good ole zoo nowadays) non unifrom days, charity days, £20 a week for lunches, etc etc. it isn't cheap for kids to go to school anymore.

But the one thing that really got my goat was at my sons junior school when he went from pencil to pen (they have a pen licence:D lol) cos he is left handed 9like me) the school would not provide him a pen and send i had to buy it, i wrote a nasty letter saying he was being discrimated against:rotfl:but it worked cos the very next day they got him one. power to the leftie's xxx

At the first school my DD is hoping to go to in September, all the kids wear the uniform although the head is keen to point out it is not obligatory so as t be inclusive to all, but all the kids do wear it and the same policy seems to be in place in the surrounding schools here.

I have Raynauds too albeit mildly but its bloody annoying when the end of 2 fingers go sooo white and numb you could easily cut them off and not feel it! x
  • Some of the uniform policies mentioned here sound so excessive. Sock inspections? Confiscating kid's coats? This is not even to prepare them for the workplace. I work somewhere with a uniform policy and they don't care what coat I wear on the way into work and I have never had sock inspections or been pulled up for wearing something under my uniform. This is just to make pupils feel powerless and will cause stress that will distract them from their studies, particularly in the case of illness.

Make sure all the relevant people in the school are aware of your daughter's health problems and request a meeting to discuss the issue. Also why can't she wear thin thermal underwear under her uniform? It should not be visible and surely they don't have an underwear policy?! That way she would have an extra layer without getting into trouble. But they need to start making reasonable accomodations for her condition.
