Cleaning pearls

I have a string of pearls passed down to me by my MIL. Recently the ones nearest the clasp have started to discolour a little I think because my (dyed) hair is always rubbing against them. Does anyone know how to get them back to their bright selves again please?

my mother in law used to rub hers with velvet. whether that cleaned them or just made them shiny, i really dont know.0
