Good idea, but if it is leasehold, check that you are permitted to erect a board. You may get away with putting one inside a road-front window, but it is often prohibited to fix anything to the outside of the building.

Are there any large employers - hospitals, universities, major companies etc, in the area who may have staff looking for accommodation?

I seem to recall you can put a for sale/to let board up as long as it's a certain size. ie not 4ft x 4ft

But if it is a leasehold flat, the LEASE may specifically prohibit any signs at all. My lease does, but as I suggested, you may be able to put something inside the window, so it can be seen from the outside.

I would imagine that would be quiet a hard covenant to enforce, similar to no washing out a certain time's or hanging clothes over a balcony,

anyway by the time they did hopefully the OP would have let it

  • Thanks for the replying again.

It's a lovely flat and we loved living there for the first 3 years. The growing hate is just us wanting to move on and probably resenting the fact we can't sell it so have to keep it! I would rather be happy which is why we moved out and we are lucky enough that we would afford to.

I don't know what's happened today, but I have had so much interest. One sounds brilliant and just what we were looking for. A couple of other people I don't know much about but at least we have a choice if the viewings go well!

If none of them come to anything then a to let board in the garden is a great idea.

There is one large business there which a friend has advertised for us at although we haven't heard anything from that!

All the interest so far has come from Gumtree!

Try findaflat.com. It is run by the same people who run spareroom.co.uk which I have used successfully.
