Help with window company :(

Options
Hi, I was wondering if somebody would be able to help me out here.

We had a quote for new windows at the end of November, for approximately £2400 (bedroom window and large downstairs patio) and we turned down the quote as that was way more than we had expected as had been given a rough quote for £1200 just for the patio from another shop in town, and thought going back to them we wouldn't be paying 900 just for the upstairs window. The salesman gave us the whole 'I'll knock 300 off and make it £2100 if you book tonight' and I was like erm no, I don't just take the first quote 5mins after it was given to me thanks. He left and we forgot about it. A couple of weeks later we were called back and told we could have it cheaper because there was no business in December and they were trying to drum up some sales so we could have both the windows as previously quoted, for £1600 which was 'business rates'. So we said, yeah thats more like it. The 'surveyor' came out, and measured everything up properly both downstairs and upstairs, and gave us a date for fitting, and we paid a deposit by card.

They fitted the patio (frame and windows) but only fitted 1 of the 4 glass panels in the bedroom as the other glass had been measured wrong. The other 3 pieces were booked to be done at a further date. They came back round, and refitted the 3 glass units correctly, and then the job was 'done'.

What the problem is, is the upstairs window. Salesman 1, on original visit, came upstairs and felt our draft and why we needed the bedroom window fixing. He explained the handles, child locks, rubber seals, different colours of PVC frame etc. As you would expect. Well when the surveyor came out, and quoted with measurements, all that was on the quote was the 4 glass units, and 3 downstairs glass units and frame. No frame on the upstairs, but boxes next to the glass units marked as 'white pvc, handles' etc.. which suggests this included the frame? I am going to have a look around for the ORIGINAL quote, from the pushy salesman number 1 because he knew the problem, and quite verbally described the new windows AND FRAME we would be buying.

If the frame isn't on the signed quote 1, is there anything we can do? Obviously according to the 2nd quote, they have fitted everything that was quoted, but why discuss the whole thing with us and not quote it, and wouldn't the 2nd salesman have asked about the frame not being quoted when he also came up to feel the draught? We were told the draft would be gone with our new WINDOWS (not just glass) and the draught (and now condensation) is still there, and so the problem hasn't gone. But they're denying the frame was included? Why wouldn't it be?! They are charging £470 for a new frame, which bumps the £1600 quote back up to the £2100 we originally turned down :(

Any advice gratefully received.

The additional problem we have, is that we have put down a £200 deposit on more windows :( now we cannot afford 2 extra windows (child bedroom, and newborn bedroom come august) and will have to use the money to pay for frame and 1 window :( Or lose the £200 deposit and go elsewhere :(

But the frame is the main consumer problem I have, if we signed the 2nd quote (and I neeed to find the 1st one) do we have a leg to stand on? :(

Michelle x

well could I advise you to summarise your post. What were you quoted for? What's the problem?

  • Sorry, i need to dig out the 1st quote, but the 2nd quote when the surveyor came round just said 4xglass for bedroom, and 3xglass+frame for patio. There was no bedroom frame mentioned :( but in the verbal discussions we had discussed the frame.

Sorry my post was too long, I was trying to give all the info x

so the upshot of this is you believed you had ordered glass and frame but the company supplied glass only...and quoted for glass only?

The first quote isn't really relevant to your case. They re-quoted and you formed a contract based on that quote.
