Tree branches/trunk recycling?

After moving into our house 6 months ago, we've managed to have a really good look at the bottom of the 100 foot garden which we know has lots of garden waste in it. Amongst the bricks, rubble and brambles, I've seen lots of big tree branches and parts of a trunk. To be honest, am not even sure if it's from our garden as I can't see any area of the garden which may have homed the tree, but hey we'll clear it anyhow.

We're wondering whether there is anything we can do with the sections of trunk - maybe cut them smaller and have as stepping stones? We would really like to reuse as much as we can...any other ideas?

Otherwise we will dispose of them somehow..

thats what im gonna do with the tree i lopped down from my front garden.

Depends how rotten they are but if fairly good you could use them yourself but as stepping stones they would become slippery. Maybe placed together to form a box and then use that as a raised bed to grow salad crops etc.
Or you could offer them up on Freecycle. Any one like my self who saves on fuel by logging would welcome them.

do you not know anyone with an open fire who may appreciate the wood we chopped down 2 huge trees last year kept my friends fire burning for quite a while

No don't burn them .........

Add to the bio-diversity in your garden/area and create a stag beetle loggery, unless the tree are from evergreens.
Why and hows below (But just dig 3ft hole, place logs in upright, wait 7 years .... )

If you wanted to use the sliced logs as stepping stones, cover them with chicken wire to stop you slipping. I have seen this done and it seems effective.

i'm about to get some trees cut down and thought i might be able to hire a wood chipper to provide lots of woodchips for the garden borders, well thats what i'm hoping to do.

Are you having the job done professionaly? if so they will probably have a chipper .My Son is a tree surgeon and can do jobs cheaper when he can leave the chips on site as it cost him around £40 a load to take it to an approved site so you may negotiate a reduced price for them leaving them . When you use the chips as they beak down they will take nitrogen from the soil.which may need to be replaced if you have hungry plants.
