Don't buy expensive cat litter

I've recently discovered a great way to save on the cost of expensive cat litter. OK, I do have 4 cats so use a lot of the stuff but the savings still apply to those of you with fewer cats, especially if they live indoors.
Buy Chick Crumb from your local agricultural/farm goods supplier. Any outlet like Town & Country or Scats.
I'd been buying The World's Best Cat Litter (Multi Cat) for my cats which costs nearly £40 for a 20kg sack. When you buy Chick Crumb which is just what is says, food for baby chicks - completely organic, biodegradable etc a 20kg bag will cost roughly £8. Huge saving of £30+ quid.
For those of you just wanting a small bag you can get these too (2 or 3kg I think) which cost around £3.50 - saving not quite so good as the 20kg bag but still less than most decent cat litters.
Chick Crumb looks identical to the cat litter I was using and clumps/performs in the same way but at a much cheaper cost!
Seeing as I use one 20kg bag every 6/8 weeks this will make me quite a saving over the year.

Hi MauQueen,
As your thread has dropped down the Old Style board I've moved it to the Pets & Pet Care board where you should get more replies.

Hi MauQueen - I'd be interested in which brand you're using if you don't mind. I've thought about using chick crumb before on other people's recommendations but struggled to find ones which are hormone and anti-biotic free. Thanks.
An alternative to wood pellet litter (if you have some storage space) is to buy it in bulk as fuel. Much cheaper but has to be bought in bulk - just search for 'cheap wood pellet fuel' online. Many of them also supply it in smaller quantities as litter but it works out much more expensive.0 -
We are currently using Asda Tiger cat litter but it's quite dusty and gets clumpy and boggy after a couple of days.0

some more info here on an older thread
i used to buy worlds best for our 2 but bengals being bengals, they refused to use it after a while. it can get weevil/creepy crawlies in it too which really put me off.
have used pets at home wood pellets for a while now, they run an offer most of the time - 2 x 30LTR bags for about £18 i think. the cats like & use it without any issues, it doesn't track too much (got similar to these mats on all the trays which does help), isn't dusty & it's what they get at the cattery.0 -

apart from that some cats will eat it - which is pretty gross!
When all's said & done it's toilet stuff so all need regular monitoring & cleaning.....0 -
Whenever I smell a turd in the tray I pick it up and put it in the toilet.0

£40 for litter !!!!!!!!!! I use Aldi and it's brilliant. I only need to replace the used part. A good clean once a week is fine.0
