Changi Airport Duty Free

I shall be travelling to Australia via Singapore and transiting to another flight. Whilst in Changi, can I purchase the maximum liquor allowance for Australia (2.25 ltr) and take it through the security before boarding the plane ? I shall not be stopping over so not exiting the airport but I know they screen you before alighting the plane.

I don't know the exact financial savings because I'm not a huge drinker
(pause for Mrs. Bob the Saver to stop laughing) but many people seem to buy spirits in Oz on the way in.

PS. Don't forget to dump your food before you arrive in Oz, they are a bit touchy about it.

PPS. On the Immigration form there is ONE question along the lines of "Are you a terrorist or abuse children or have you and drugs or medicines" don't forget to answer YES if you have the usual travellers
first aid essentials, you can sort out which bit you are answering yes to later.

The price at Oz airport duty frees are not as cheap as Singapore so hence the question.

I don't know the answer... but it's valid question. We got caught out at Kuala Lumpur where they do search you and confiscate any liquids over 100ml even on transfers. Luckily it was only a bottle of water.

In answer to the question, yes you can buy your spirits purchased in Transit area Duty Free shops at Changi and carry them on as packaged in the tamper free bags.

Can I bring liquid, aerosol and gel items purchased at Changi Airport's shops onboard my flight?

    * Shops Within Transit Malls
Most passengers can continue to purchase liquid, aerosol and gel items, such as liquor, wine, beer, perfumes and cosmetics (including creams/lotions/gels), at shops located within Changi Airport's Transit Malls. Such purchases will be placed in sealed tamper-evident bags provided by the shops, with the receipt clearly displayed in the sealed bags.

Passengers who are transferring or transiting at other airports should check the restrictions applicable at those airports. Please check with Changi Airport shop staff for details.

I'll assume you know that ciggies are particularly cheap at Changi, so worth taking if you know folk in Aus?

On the subject of declaring food, the following tip was given to me some time past and it has stood me in good stead.

Make sure you have a chocolate bar or similar when entering Aus and tick the "yes" question in relation to carrying food. This will enable you to join the invariably far shorter queue of folk who have declared something rather than the queue of non declarers who get quizzed just the same. What's more the declarers queue seems to move faster. :)

You can buy duty free on arrival in most Australian airports. The security restrictions for liquids and gels into Australia are stringent... you have to buy at your last port of call or on your last flight... you cannot buy at your first airport or on the first flight. It is better to go to the duty free on arrivals shops when you get there to properly avoid any problems. In Singapore, if it is your last stopover, it may be ok, but you need to check with them carefully and ensure you get a sealed bag. Do not buy anywhere else.

Due to an unfavourable exchange rate with most foreign currencies, I don't even consider buying liquor at international duty free shops and lugging them halfway around the world just to save a few quid.

For example - today a 1 litre bottle of Bacardi Rum is £15.00 in my local Morrison's - the same product on my recent trip in various Duty Free shops in Asia varied between 10 - 12 quid. Factor in the risk of breakage and luggage weight - it is just not worth the effort.

Although I don't smoke, significant savings can still be made on cigarette and tobacco and I do purchase rolling tobacco and cigarettes to bring home as gifts, but unless there is a bottle of alcohol that is specific to the region I am visiting that is difficult to get back home, then I just don't bother.
