Help with working out what we are entitled to

I need a bit of help / advice as to how to work out if me and my partner will be entitled to any benefits either now or after we have our baby

Firstly this is my first child and will be born near 16th April 2012

I am currently working and my gross salary is £23,500.00, my partner is unemployed but not receiving any benefits (he was self employed but his business failed and he hadn’t made enough national insurance contributions to be entitled to anything)

The house we are in is mortgaged

Neither of us at present received any benefits

My question is, will I be entitled to anything after the baby is born or do I have to wait until I go back to work part time (by which point my pay will drop to £14400.00 gross per year) and if so what will we be entitled to?

After the baby is born you will be entitlted to £20 per week child benefit and a little child tax credits.

How many hours will you be doing when you go part time?

  • could you go back to work full time and your partner stay home and look after the baby - unless he gets a job that pays more than you currently earn (fingers crossed for him) ? Congrats on the baby, hope all goes well.

If your partner is not currently working, why would you voluntarily give up £9K of income?

Best bet would be for you to go back to work F/T and your partner to stay home and look after the baby until such point as he finds a job.
