it would make a whole lot of difference if they stated in he adverts - Preference Given to Internal Applicants - then people would know not to bother

My local Trust has been known to advertise jobs for just a few hours on their website on the day that the job closes. Apparently they do this because they are "inundated with applications". How anybody other than those in the know would even see the vacancy and have time to complete the online application is beyond my comprehension.

A few years ago I was agency secretarial staff in the Trust. They decided that my post should be permanent, however since I was agency I wasn't allowed to apply for it. They even had the cheek to expect me to train the successful candidate the day before I went on the dole! The grapevine around the admin staff correctly predicted who would get the job anyway, so I wouldn't have been successful even if I was allowed to apply.

I know they have budgets, and that they must stick to policy, and the goalposts are forever shifting, but sometimes when the person predicted to get the job does get the job it whiffs a bit of bureaucracy for the sake of bureaucracy.
  • i have been submitted by various AGY's for several temp jobs at Rolls Royce. Each and EVERY time its gone internal less than 24 hours later. these companies should QUIT wasting peoples time and should go down the internal route rather than giving false hope and wasting peoples money going to the interviews; it does far more psychological damage because you are getting a carrot dangled for attention then quickly taken away; leaving you with the impression that you will never get a job.

It's senseless and for me leaves me with an impression that the companies do not know what they are doing and looks unprofessional.

I can answer that one... There are plenty of people out there who will apply for absolutely any NHS job whether or not they meet the criteria; they just cut and paste their standard spiel. So the job may get 120 applicants of whom 95 are totally unsuitable but the rules mean the recruiting manager still has to review them and declare why they rejected this application (mostly to cover themselves against accusations of bias). So they try to cut down on those with the accompanying risk that a really good candidate might be out there but not see the ad.
I need to think of something new here...

Or because the jobcentre match them and make them apply for it....

I was matched to a job that does not match my soc codes on Thursday all because I mentioned applying for another job in the same village that I can get to despite the bus service being hit and miss I said 'I can get there but the first bus gets there at 815am and the last bus back leaves at 330pm' the job he matched me too is 7am-4pm and he told me to apply and ask about flexibility in hours.

Talk about wasting mine and the recruiters times.

But it meets the JobCentre+ drone's targets and therefore that's the more important thing to them than actually finding anything that suits your needs. The likes of A4e are worse since they sometimes get paid by sending people to interviews no matter how unsuitable. Recruitment Consultants are often no better - they just wear nicer clothes to the office, have posher names and charge the recruiting company more for sending them not-really-suitable people...
