How to figure out best supplier for new house?

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone could give any advice on how to go about choosing the best (cheapest) supplier for a new house that the wife and I have just bought?

We're just about to move from a two bed flat (where we, pretty much, never used the heating as the building always seemed hot enough without it) to a detached house. Obviously we don't have any usage stats for the last year to work out on the comparison sites who might be cheapest so what's the best way to go about it?

Do we just go for whoever has the cheapest tariff or might there be hidden charges/clauses, etc?

I appreciate there may be a really simple and obvious answer to this so I apologise in advance for my ignorance! Many thanks

:D

  • Well firstly on moving in you MUST sign up to the current provider of the property, so first thing take meter readings and give them a ring giving the readings and your details.

Then you are free to look around. Use a comparison site and IF the house has gas central heating you can use the national average figures which are 16500 kwh gas and about 3200 kwh electric. for current supplier put the standard tariff who supplies it now. This will give you some idea who will be cheapest but not how much you will pay as you do not know your usage, however rest assured it will be more than the flat.

Initially when you ring them they will try to put you on their standard tariff. That is OK if you intend to move as it has no exit charges, if you wish to stay with them then you could always change to a cheaper tariff later.

If you do decide to switch it will take about 4-6 weeks so you will get a bill from the current supplier for that period.
