Can I sell my old car battery?
I have hunted but can't find anything anywhere more recent than a few years ago.
We have just had to replace the battery on our car, and the old one is just sitting around. What is the best thing to do with it?
I know I can probably take it to the tidy tip, but would hate to do that then find out that I could sell it, or, if not, if there is somewhere that it could be recycled.

I listed my old one on Freecycle. Someone collected it to use in a project investigating wind farming - he needed it for a prototype.Mortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0

When I was looking on the web to see what to do with it, I did come across people who had sold old car batteries. They were a few years old, so I don't know if it would still happen.
That's why I ask. No idea what people would do with them, but I may have a go on freecycle and see if anyone there may just possibly have a use for it. You never know!!Father Ted: Now concentrate this time, Dougal. These

They can profitably be recycled for their lead content - there are specialist scrappies I don't know if they would buy a single battery from you.0 -
Stand it out on the pavement.I have hunted but can't find anything anywhere more recent than a few years ago.

It will be gone before the day is over.

If someone else could get a couple of quid for it, I don't see why it should go in their pocket and not mine!!Father Ted: Now concentrate this time, Dougal. These

But for a couple of quid how far/how much in petrol will you spend to get £2-30

I sold one once to my neighbour for £20. It was a bit !!!!!!ed, I'd shorted it once causing some big sparks and the green health indicator had vanished too. Despite that it was still very good, still started a 2.5L engine first time and never let me down once.
My neighbours battery was totally pancaked. Wouldn't recharge, wouldn't hold charge, it was only good for a doorstop. He wanted a battery that worked I'd already bought a replacement elsewhere for £10 (second hand with 2 years warranty and receipt!!!) so I let him have my old one for £20. He was well chuffed and is still using it now!
That said, that scenario is rare and if your battery is totally fried no-one is going to want it. If you have a shed you could always use it to power a small light bulb like I've done with one of my dudds.0
