xbox help please

Options
Hi everyone just after a bit of advice please :) I bought my son an XBOX for Christmas, I ordered from the catalogue on 24th Nov 2011 and obviously being a present he didn't use until 25th Dec. He then used it until 5th Jan 2012 (not constantly as he goes out with friends and does other stuff etc). We then went away and he didn't use the console again until 21st Jan where it seems to have developed a fault. The problem is due to the disc drive not staying shut so he can't load games, even when the power is turned off the drawer opens! I have looked on the XBOX website and there are instructions for when this problem happens which tells me that it must be a common fault?
I rang the catalogue who immediately told me that I had to ring XBOX and deal with them, i said that I was certain that it was the retailer that I dealt with not the manufacturer (is this correct?). XBOX have said that it needs to be sent for repair which I am not happy about as they have said that it will take approx 3/4 weeks which I know is not that long but to an 11 year old who has new games to use and a brand new XBOX live subscription that is for 12 months it is (paid for all by himself). I am also concerned that once opened to be repaired that it then voids my warranty etc.
Does anyone know where I stand and the best course of action? I understand that if we have to have it repaired we will but i am worried that it is almost brand new and if this is a problem that is common will we be protected if it happens again after the machine has been opened up?
Thanks for reading :)

  • return it to xbox, the turn around is very fast, and the only solution. im think this is your only choice. and the quicker you start the ball rolling the quicker it will be back.

mines been back a few times over the years, and its very quick.

The catalogue company will only get it repaired for you if you insist on them dealing with it, this will take two weeks longer than going direct to microsoft using their return procedure. I have used it twice in the past and both times it was away and back within 10 days.

Microsoft keep a history of the machine so any repairs by them do not invalidate your warranty.

Also, if it does take 4 weeks complain to MS and they may increase your live subscription to cover it.

I called MS the other day for a major software and wifi problem with my Elite - sorted out over the phone in 30 minutes, I was absolutely astounded how good, polite and efficient they were.

Especially considering I've had that console a fair few years now - September 2007 I seem to recall.
  • Microsoft always throw in a one months xbox live gold subscription card as an apology for the fault, it will be in the box when you get your xbox returned. Just enter the code and it will add it onto what ever your son has left on his subscription.

Once youve contacted Microsoft, they will email you a DHL lable. You can book the collection slot on the DHL website. I completed the form at 1pm and arranged DHL to collect at 3pm the exact same day! Your looking at a maximum of 10 days turnaround, if that.

As mentioned you do get a 1 month LIVE sub to use, sending it to MS is easy plus dealing with the catalogue co may well be a long and drawn out process whereas dealing with ms is easy and may take less than the 3/4 weeks stated.

" I am also concerned that once opened to be repaired that it then voids my warranty etc."

Your warranty i still intact as MS themselves will be opening up the machine to fix.

We had to send one of our xbox's that was 7 months old back to microsoft because it stopped working. Upon its return then had extended the warranty by an extra 3 months.
