I need some help...

I am currently in my second year and have really mucked up this semester. I'm not going to come out with excuses, I just underestimated the workload so have no circumstances or anything. I enjoy the course but the workload I completely misjudged.

I know I have passed one module but the other two I am very unsure of and I am a bit worried that, if I fail them, I'll have to do resits and just get 40% on them or even fail them.

First question, if I do have to resit and fail, what will happen then? Would I be able to repeat a year or not?

I have been thinking of transferring and starting at year 2 in a university closer to home. I currently live 200 miles away from home and I didn't feel homesick at all in the first year but I am missing some comforts of home.

Second question, if I transfer, do I still get the funding for a further 2 years at the other uni and what do I have to do about this?

Talk to your tutor or student support to find out what happens when you fail modules, as it varies from uni to uni. At mine, you get one automatic resit and if you fail that you can go before a panel to plead your case for a third go. Some courses allow you to re-do a whole year and some don't, so nobody here will be able to give you an answer on that.
  • As for transferring ensure you speak to the other uni if you consider it as a serious option. I started a year 2 and hated it (I'd already started having some doubts in the first year that I'd chosen the wrong uni) and assumed I could just transfer to the same course elsewhere. I had to put together a huge portfolio of everything I'd done in my first year compared to the new uni's modules to show how things matched. Everything was looking good until I was told it wasn't a close enough match so my transfer was unsuccessful. It resulted in me waiting through the whole of last year to find out if I had a place at the new uni back on year 1! So I'm now basically repeating the year I did at my old uni but having said that I've never been happier! And it's completely different content so I'm not sat feeling like I've done everything already.

Everyone from my old uni graduates this year and yes part of me has wondered whether I should have just stuck it out, but then I also think I'm glad I did what I did because although I'll graduate a lot later I'm happier and that's worth more to me.

Good luck with whatever you decide :)

And, if this were to be the case for the OP it would be a complete disaster as he would not only have to fund the first year himself and he'd have to do this on the new fees!

My son failed his first year by 2 exams each worth 20 credits. His Uni would allow him to carry forward to the next year 20 but not 40. He originally sat them at the beginning of the first year and had mitigating circumstances so was allowed to re-sit at the end of the year (Sept) which he failed; it was a Joint Honours Course (3yrs) and this was the part he did'nt enjoy. He then changed his course slightly but with the same Uni after talking and in agreement with his tutors. So he started a new 3 year course Sept 2011 and is eligible for Student Finance. They will give you a loan for up to 4 years, you just go on the website and there is a link to change it. He is much happier with this course and doesnt mind being away from home although it's less than 100 miles from us so easier to get to/from.
As the previous post says if you start a new course this Sept you will be paying the new higher tuition fees.
All the best for the future.

Also might be an idea to talk to your 'Student Support', most Uni's have details, information and FAQ's on their website.

Yes indeed which is why it's not a decision to rush into. If I'd been in my situation this year I'd have stuck it out rather than having to go on to the increased fees.

It's not an easy situation to find yourself in so I have full sympathy.
