after some advice / likely cost projection, on some projects that will need doing.. 1- shower, 2- bath tiling, 3- bath taps (restricted space access)

1- shower
The old shower unit in my flat wore out, and was removed by council -
they were going to replace it, until found out it wasnt originally installed by them (most likely my dad did / paid for it, many moons ago..)

still have hot & cold pipes in place, with isolation valves on each. wiring for unit went behind bath panel to purpose-fit fused switch on wall, then onto normal (13amp?) plug in airing cupboard..
both ends safely cutoff / covered with insulating tape at present.

i may be able to blag a shower unit, though wonder what likely cost is, to get fitted? how many person hours?

hot water now comes from combi boiler (pressure 1-1.5 bar?) so just need a boost to get above my lanky head height..

2- tiling round bath.
The bottom 2 or 3 rows, just above the bath, are looking a bit grotty after several dad DIY decorating attempts, with grout and sealant in need of attention..

It sounds like some are not stuck to a solid surface- what would the tiles likely to be fixed to, if not direct to the wall? I'd hate to start taking some away, totally foul it up, and end up with a much bigger job!

building is a purpose built block of flats, about 35-40 years old.. I could probably manage simple tile replacements..

many thanks for any worthy leads!

PS- 3rd project just remembered! bath taps will need replacing too.. though bath is fitted against wall, very little space/leverage to hold bottom ends, to unscrew/remove?

  • Hi
My recommendation is to shop around, I have just completed my bathroom and the total cost was £3900.
This included bathroom suite, underfloor heating, shower, shower pump, new hot water cylinder (when the old one was discovered to be leaking) floor and wall tiles, re plastering, plumber and tiler. And it looks fantastic!!!!

It sounds like the OP wants to spend a lot less than that!

The electric shower installation sounds awful. I'm not an electrician, but I'm fairly certain it should not have a plug.

Since you now have a combi, why the electric shower?

Change the taps for some with a mixer & shower hose & head.

You could get a handyman in to change taps, tile bottom 3 rows, reseal & cap the old shower pipes or remove them. That should all be possible in one day, so call around for handyman prices.

Or, if you want the electric shower, get a couple of electricians in for quotes to sort out the electrics & install a new shower. Handyman for the rest.
