----

I wonder if you can help.

I am about to lay loft insulation in the loft, over a bathroom.

The bathroom has spot lights.

I would be most grateful if you could tell me what I need to do with regards to them and loft insulation.

Many thanks

Suggest getting some downlight covers. Link gives info. Insulating Downlight Cap - Ideal for use with loft insulation.

Or a cheaper alterntive might be Terracotta Flower Pots.
  • Thanks all, that is really helpful.

Any idea if a highstreet chain, B&Q or screwfix, etc will stock the caps?

The insultation is being put in tomorrow

    Thanks

Think that Screwfix sell them or maybe Toolstation . Look under "intumescent covers"

Not a good idea . The purpose of these covers is to prevent fire spread by expanding when heated to form a seal.

But you don't normally need fire hoods between an upstairs ceiling and a loft (unless the loft has been converted for dwelling in).

The idea of the flower pots is just to keep the loft insulation off the downlights. They even come with pre-made ventilation holes in the "top".
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

tony6403 was not suggesting firehoods, but loft caps. Loft caps are not just a thermal seal, but also keep bathroom steam/vapour out of the loft.

It's inexpensive to fit these things - are they cheaper than flower pots anyway ?? Surely better where possibility of any fire spread is concerned to get the proper kit .

Ecto should read the spec. ( in the link in post 3 ) for the caps.
