I suppose the question is whether this extra £20 is systematic and part of the SOP of the insurance company.

Look at the RSA scam where they used a wholly owned subsidiary company as an intermediary between them and the repairers with the sole intention of adding 20 or 30% internal profit to the repair costs on claims where they were going to reclaim the costs from another insurance company. I doubt many would argue that isn't fraudulent, it certainly would be if a punter did it
  • Ultimately what RSA were doing exceptionally rarely disadvantaged the customer as what their insurer reclaims from the TPI doesnt impact them, the customer of the TPI is not their customer and rarely do policyholders buy back claims.

You can also question if RSA were a little unfairly picked on given other insurers own ARCs and so clearly are making a profit on the work done, some supply the parts to the ARCs for the repairs so make a profit on that and some have profit share agreements with ARCs so get kickbacks.

Certainly RSA was a blatant offender as what the subsidiary did added little/ no value but they arent the only ones getting additional income streams from instructing repairs to vehicles which are not reflected back in the amount recovered from the TPI.
  • Thank you for the advice. I will follow up on some the suggestions alongside the action I had already taken this morning.

For information and to close this thread:

I took screen shots last night (I always do on any internet transaction) and then asked to speak to a supervisor this morning. I had told them that the policy was talked through with my partner last night to check all details (for those doubters above who thought we had not checked the policy details) and that the operator overcharged by £20 because they claimed that the access to additional car was checked, when clearly it wasn't. The supervisor checked the details of the policy against that from the comparison website against what they had and agreed with me that we were correct and that the details did not show that the box had been checked. The supervisor could not understand where the salesrep came up with the additional £20 from.

I also confirmed that I had screen shots of the policy details clearly showing that the box was unmarked. I also let them know that I suspect the FSA would take a dim view of the deception that had occurred. Result a very apologetic customer service rep and a refund of the difference directly back on to the card.

I am not going to claim I am an expert on the minutae detail of FSA regulations but I do know something about IT and banking / insurance products, legality etc etc etc and I know how data transfer works between comparison and insurer websites as well. Nothing had been changed.

I have heard about this forum being friendly and very knowledgable, with "insiders" on the forums to help steer customers and company's on the right path. I will say thank you to those who offered genuine support.

Fraud is taking money by deception. Of course this salesrep will be spoken to and if they had any sense they will say they made a genuie mistake. But just to make sure that salesrep doesn't do that to anyone else I will be following up on Mikey72's suggestion.

Happy to accept the most fantastic over the top title of the year - it did what I wanted it do and that was get a response with help and advice.

Many thanks to hcb42, insideinsurance, and Mikey72.
