Tesco, Technika TV and Tosh

Options
AAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!! I feel better now.

I should know better. I bought a Technika television from Tesco in October 2010. Last weekend it decided it didn't want to work any more. I can hear sound but no display.

Phoned Tesco 'helpline' - was told nothing to do with them as it's over a year old and have to phone skymedia.

Phoned skymedia - got fed up of being on hold so emailed them. The reply they sent said as it was out of warrenty I could pay £49.99 for it to be fixed. In the manual it says there is a 24 month manufacturer's warrenty.

I emailed back this evening telling them I shouldn't be paying for repair, and am waiting for them to get back to me. Paid by credit card.

So... I know it was a cheap tv but to last just over a year is tosh. Read things about an EU regulation?, SOGA. What's my best course of action? Don't want a new Technika TV that's for sure.:D

First of all, forget the "EU regulation."

Did you register the TV with the manufacturer when you got it? That's often a requirement for their extended warranties
One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.

Warranty will be for parts and labour, the charge could be shipping. Would be better to go back to tesco and keep arguing the point that it should have lasted longer than it has done, but in a nice way. If you go in guns blazing, it will just get there back up.

May be able to get back a proportional amount back on your money if you do it nicely.

  • Thanks.

Wasn't sure about the EU thing I'd read on here somewhere. Didn't register the product.

Apparently the charge is for parts and shipping. I have to 'buy' the part first and then they will arrange collection.

I can be very very nice in a threatening way when I need to be. I'll have to write to them though as I fall apart on the phone to customer services!

Don't think you have to buy the part, as how would you know what part to buy without getting an engineer to look at it.

If it was instore, be better to go in and talk to someone in charge. But otherwise do it all in writing, send it registered as well, can't claim they did not receive it then.

May be someone on here who know's a bit more about SOGA and what you can do about it.

  • Thinking of trying to get the repair fee off Tesco. They could give it as a goodwill gesture. Can't hurt to ask them, they can only say no.

The email said 'buy the part' but when I checked website it's a fixed fee for parts, labour and shipping.
  • Hi not sure if you sorted this? but exactly same thing happened to me with virually same dates.
I contacted Tesco customer services, they emailed me an out of warranty form, following week I recieved a cheque for £229.00, tv originally cost £329.00, so I think its pretty fair.

    Try it yourself
