Since we don't know distance or materials, access points may or may not work either - test it first!

Move the router and add a longer ethernet cable or a wireless dongle to the PC that's currently attached by ethernet?0

or consider going for a Billion 7800N router, one of the best routers out there for wifi coverage. See how many people you can spot saying "the wi-fi coverage is far stronger than my previous modem/routers..." in the reviews. Your friend could always return it for a refund if he/she doesn't think its made much difference
