Wow - shocking news. It is sad that the gov caused 11% of the cuts. With cuts like that in education, it is hurting the future. We need educated young people in order to grow our of financial crises and to better ourselves.0

interesting slightly different take here - looks like they'll be getting Uni of Lincoln degrees but be taught at Lincoln College. pretty rubbish news for students to get after already applying.... should have been made clear earlier in the process for them.:happyhear0 -
The six courses affected are: American Studies, Herbal Medicine, Acupuncture, Sports Business Management, Golf Science & Development and Social Science.
Somehow this makes the news seem a lot less arresting.Said Aristippus, “If you would learn to be subservient to the king you would not have to live on lentils.”
Said Diogenes, “Learn to live on lentils and you will not have to be subservient to the king.”0 -
who is going to pay £9000 to fundamentally go to a polytechnic0

unfortunately the courses in this country are dumbed down. Exams which do not require excellent spelling and often in many cases students can text talk their way through an exam 'so long as they get their point across'
This country needs to get over themselves, our education system is flawed. With a bunch of flawed people who have gone to converted polytechnics to get into teaching. They sit on their facebooks all day, they cannot teach and they are useless.
With a free education system it is all down to the teachers giving the passion and pride. And we aint talking inner city poop holes, this is in the most inexcusable communities.0 -
I have to say, I don't think this is a bad thing.
Those courses should probably have never been degrees anyway in fairness. I can't help but feel a bit cynical on this, in that it's an attempt to gain headlines. The private universities the VC is complaining about have, in the majority, been eligible for student loans for a very long time. They've ran alongside the universities, charging much higher fees than they have, yet still attracted students who would not receive full funding for those higher fees. I don't really recall any universities complaining then, but if someone would like to provide evidence of this I'd be happy to listen.0 -
Zziggi-I don't think it was a teacher training college, think you may be thinking of Bishop Grosseteste University College which I believe is a completely separate thing.
I guess if certain Unis will not lower their tuition fees then this is what the Government will make them do in a bid to keep funding down (if I understand correctly that this is why it was done). Makes you wonder who will gain the most from this? Certainly not the student, and I don't think the college either, so is this just a way for Unis to top up their cash by throwing a small percentage of it at local colleges? I wholeheartedly agree that there are many 'degree' courses that really should not be entertained0 -

No I'm not devildog. Bishop Grott has always been a teacher training college in Lincoln. Uni of Lincoln used to be Uni of Lincolnshire & humberside formally university of humberside with sites in Hull and Lincoln. Prior to that was Uni of humberside with sites in hull formally humberside poly with sites in Hull formally.... You get the picture.
Basically a poly in hull developed sites in Lincoln & then slowly dropped its connection and sites in Hull. Bishop Grott is separate & always has been.0
