You should also check for updated drivers from the manufacturer's website just in case this is why you can't output from VGA and DVI at the same time.

If the VGA has never worked on the X1550 why did you not send it back for a replacement? Might be a bit late now depending on how old it is but it's something to think about.

Generally I do return items that do not function as expected but on this occassion I did not for whatever reason. Think it was the online retailer had a rubbish return policy (hassle of sending it back, being tested by them and probably being told it all works on their end). This was back in 2006 or 2007.

Downloaded and installed the latest available drivers and ATI app from AMD site (AMD must have taken over company in recent years, used to be Sapphire).

The app does come up with option for dual monitors but tells me (obviously) there is no second monitor connected.

Gone on ebay and ordered some cheapo cables. DVI-D cable and a splitter cable (DVI-I to VGA and DVI-D). One of these might do the trick hopefully.

I have a suspicion that this card must have DVI as the primary output and if I connected both DVI and VGA ports with two separate cables, it might work. That or use the splitter.
  • If you use the splitter you will only be able to duplicate the screens.

You will need to get the DVI and VGA working together with dedicated cables for each. I have a GTS 550 with VGA & DVI & HDMI. I use the VGA and DVI with no problems, and no changes to bios.

Maybe go back and re-set your bios to what it was before and look for the most up-to-date software for the graphics card, and use the correct cables as using adaptors change the signal and if you are doing that twice (once at both ends) the signal will develop errors.

    Hope this helps

That is a shame about the splitter . Had a bad feeling that might be the case, hence ordered a DVI cable as well as a splitter cable.

Tried resetting bios before, its never worked, the PCI card is meant to override the integrated VGA output. Will see if I can get it working when the new cable arrives.
