Car Clamped

I went to Lakeside last night only to come back to find my car had been clamped, I really could not understand at the time why, it was free parking and I was not parked illegal, I phoned up the number only to be told that it had outstanding parking tickets on it, I explained I had not long brought the car (end of November) the person named is the man who had my car before me, they came after a while and asked if I had my insurance on me as lol asif.
The man said he was tired and that it was to late to do anything or check anything, he unclamped it and said that he would ring me this morning to get my insurance details then would sort it out of the system
Well surprise surprise I had no call, now I'm worried about leaving my car as it could /will happen again and he also advised it could be towed.
Does anyone know how i can check to see what is outstanding, and who to contact about this.

First things first, who has clamped your car?
It may be helpful if you post this on the pepipoo forums:

If this is a private company, they are not allowed to clamp for oustanding debts.0 -
It sounds like a cowboy bailiff who had the previous owner on his list and thought he struck lucky (the car is now in your name isn't it).0
-
Why on earth would they want your insurance details anyway? - PPCs have no business with that. Your V5 would probably be more appropriate to prove ownership.0

First thing I did when I got home was to check docs where in my name although I knew they was, but just needed to check as i could not understand why dvla had not flagged him to say the car had changed owners, but knowing very little on this, not sure if the technology is in place for it......... his scared me by saying it can be towed and clamped by others as well ...
Thanks Sarahg1969 will have a look laters and post0 -

If it was the DVLA or a court- or council-appointed bailiff, then there may have been a reason for the clamping.
If this was a private company (eg whoever patrols Lakeside's car parks), then they would be committing an offence if they clamp or tow for an alleged debt.0 -
If it was the DVLA or a court or council appointed bailiff, private company then they can check the registered keeper through the DVLA you have no need to provide any documents to anybody
The reason they don't want to do this is its cost them £2.50 for each check they doI am not an expert I am self taught i have no legal training any information I post is based on my own personal experience and information gained from other web sites
If you are in any doubt please seek legal/expert advice help0 -
I brought the car from a ford car dealers (not a dodgy car seller) would they not check these things out before they sell them, I mean can I go back to them ask them why. lol think i'm a tad annoyed about it all0

Thankyou I know the it's all in my name and I'll have great pleasure in telling them they are breaking the law, (after checking who they are first tho lol)
Thanks all0 -
My advice to you, as a retired policeman, is to report this incident to the police asap. Make sure you get an incident log reference number. Give the police as much information as possible. Should you have this happen again, dial 999, call the police and quote the incident log reference number you are given. This will alert them to the fact it has been reported to them previously. It may be advisable to take someone with you when you visit Lakeside, just in case one of these comedians has another try and you have the good fortune to catch them in the act. From the circumstances you have described, you would be justified in detaining them, pending the arrival of the police, on the grounds of one or more of the following -
Interfering with a Motor Vehicle (Criminal Attempts Act)0
