Maintenance charges- unacceptable increases

  • It would be different if the owner of the freehold was insisting on the increase or insisting that additional work was done.

This was agreed by residents who discussed it at an AGM. I think you are making yourself angry by assuming that since they are retired that they are all loaded and fancy-free. They may well be experienced and know the block very well and what regular maintenance needs to be done. retired people have a pot of money that keeps going down in value, they don't like spending money out of this pot.

If you're in a leasehold block then there will always be some things that don't seem fair. What if you lived on the first floor and never used the lift but had to share the cost to fix it? What if your Uncle Bob can paint your windows for free but you have to pay for exterior redecoration every 10 years. This is also how it would be if you did manage yourselves....endless arguments and residents refusing to co-operate and back-down on matters.

Your best bet is to approach someone who was at the AGM and ask for more information on what needs to be done and why it will cost more than expected.
